Elden Ring has been selling like hotcakes, becoming FromSoftware's most commercially successful release to date. But having taken the number one spot on sales charts in the UK, it has now been dethroned by a new entrant: Polyphony Digital's Gran Turismo 7.

Having launched a few days ago, the latest entry in the classic racing series has sped to the top of the sales charts, and is the fourth new UK boxed number one in four weeks, according to tracker GfK.

These boxed sales, for both the PS5 and PS4 versions of the game, were 28 percent lower than for 2017's launch of Gran Turismo Sport, but the digital market has grown significantly since that time. Digital sales numbers will be released later this week. As for breakdown of sales for the different generations: 76 percent of Gran Turismo 7's sold copies were for PS5, and the rest on PS4.

Gran Turismo 7

As Gaming Biz reports, Gran Turismo 7 is the fourth-biggest boxed launch this year, behind Pokemon Legends: Arceus, Horizon Forbidden West, and Elden Ring. It is Sony's second chart-topper of 2022 so far, along with Forbidden West. As a result of GT7's drive to the top, Elden Ring now slips to second place, with a 69 percent drop in sales week-on-week. This is still a strong performance, however, as Gaming Biz notes a fall of around 80 percent in the second week is more the norm for this type of game.

Elden Ring remains the best-selling game of the year so far, and quite comfortably in fact. As measured by both digital and physical sales, Elden Ring was the biggest non-FIFA or Call of Duty launch in the UK since 2018's Red Dead Redemption 2. It was bigger than Assassin's Creed Valhalla, and topped Cyberpunk 2077, and its sales were two and a half times bigger than Horizon Forbidden West.

Another new entry in the GfK UK Boxed Top 10 for the week ending March 5, besides Polyphony's car sim, is Square Enix's RPG Triangle Strategy, which has entered the chart at number seven. TheGamer has a review of Triangle Strategy, where our lead features editor said it was "one of the best tactical JRPGs" they've played in some time.
