Grand Theft Auto is a name that's become pretty common, and one doesn't exactly need to be a gamer to know what the series is all about. For people who don't really engage in gaming, Grand Theft Auto will probably elicit a mental image of a grown-up game chalked full of unspeakable activities. It paints a rather unflattering picture of the entire game — which is something Rockstar has very much intended. This identity provides them with a ton of free publicity in the form of exaggerated news reports and discussions on various media channels. These certainly haven't even made a dent on the huge sales figures that the franchise has generated over the past 20 years.

This is because most people even somewhat familiar with gaming know and understand why Grand Theft Auto is at the absolute pinnacle of open-world gaming. Rockstar is truly one of the best video game publishers of all time, and the series that resulted in this great public image in the first place was — you guessed it — Grand Theft Auto. It's a series so amazing that even now, people find — and are still finding — tricks that they can perform and secrets that they haven't discovered as of yet. Keeping this in mind, here are 15 of the most obscure things in the Grand Theft Auto series that you've probably missed.

15 The Bodies And Messages Of The Infinity Killer (GTA V)

via reddit.com

The world of Grand Theft Auto V is truly one of the most detailed open-worlds one can experience in a video game, and — along with The Witcher III — serves as a lesson to other AAA developers on how to build a world that actually feels real. The sheer number of oddities, secrets, and events that can be found in this game are simply mind-boggling... and at times, somewhat creepy.

The best example of the latter is the exploits of Merle Abrahams, a.k.a. the Infinity Killer — a deranged serial criminal who ended eight people and buried them all over the game's open world. His nursery rhymes, victims, and a newspaper clipping detailing his chilling exploits can be found all over San Andreas, which are equal parts fascinating and disturbing.

14 Access The Hidden Interiors Universe (GTA: San Andreas)

via steamcommunity.com

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is undoubtedly one of the best video games of all time, and the reason why many people got into video gaming in the first place. The game simply blew people's minds in 2004, providing gamers with an open-world sandbox where they could pretty much do whatever they wanted, whenever they wanted... and wherever they wanted.

The last bit meant that players could enter a host of buildings for whatever purpose, but what most people don't know is that all these interiors co-existed on a plane above the game's height limit. Using a jetpack to fly through the Ganton Gym's roof is the best way to access this so-called Hidden Interiors Universe, through which you can access all the interiors present in the game (including a few that were cut from the finished product).

13 A Throwback To Your Earlier Exploits In Grove Street (GTA: San Andreas)

via youtube.com by DannyEddy357

The opening moments of San Andreas involves a particular mission where CJ, Sweet, and Big Smoke need to run away from some Ballas who tried to shoot them while they were visiting the grave of CJ's mother. A rather memorable bike ride later, the tone of the game was pretty much set.

Rockstar decided to add a nice little callback to this moment in Grand Theft Auto V, in the mission Hood Safari. In the middle of this mission, you'll notice three people cycling furiously on their bikes, sporting the colors of Grove Street. It doesn't take a lot of time to realize that these men closely resemble the trio who had to escape the Ballas in San Andreas.

Kudos, Rockstar.

12 A Rockstar Games Store... In A Rockstar Game (GTA: Vice City)

via eeggs.com

It's always cool when game developers decide to go meta. And this is pretty freakin' meta, if you ask me.

We've already talked about how Rockstar always adds a ton of interesting things that people can find in their games, and a particular store that can be found in the world of Vice City is the perfect example of this.

Ocean Beach is one of the most prominent and happening areas of Vice City, with a large number of unique establishments that you can check out for your own amusement. This particular store is placed just north of the Pole Position Club, and just happens to be a Rockstar video games store.

Again... pretty freakin' meta.

11 Use The Police Impound Garage To Store Your 'Special' Vehicles (GTA: San Andreas)

via youtube.com by fnxrak

The impound garage is where the vehicle you were driving goes once you get busted (which — to be fair — doesn't really happen all that often). This particular garage is pretty massive, and you'll get slapped with a wanted rating if you try and enter this place through any normal means. The only way to gain entry is by keeping the door propped open with a police vehicle.

Once you follow these steps, you can park any car you want in the basement of these impound garages, which are massive and can hold whichever vehicle you want. Even powerful and rare planes like Hydras can be kept in this place as well, which can be taken out whenever you're stuck in a particularly hard part of the game.

10 A Hidden Site To Identify And Target Pedophiles (GTA IV)

via gta.wikia.com

This is a classic Rockstar move, if there ever was one.

Grand Theft Auto IV is single-handedly responsible for bringing the long-running series to the modern era, and doing so in spectacular fashion. The integration of a large number of modern innovations and developments has made the game so precious in the eyes of gamers that some of then argue that Grand Theft Auto V might actually have been a step back for the series.

Grand Theft Auto IV also included its own browser, with a pretty shady secret as well. If a player happened to search www.littlelacysurprisepageant.com (not that we're judging... except that we totally are), then they'll get a chastising message, and the LCPD will jump on them with a 5-star wanted rating to boot.

9 Buy Tickets At The Airport To Travel To Different Locations (GTA: San Andreas)

via thegtaplace.com

Travelling around in San Andreas is a ton of fun, and why wouldn't a player select their radio of choice and jam along to the tunes while they travel the countryside? Well, it seems that most gamers did exactly that, since the majority of them have no inkling about the fact that you can actually use the airport to travel to the various cities present in San Andreas.

This certainly comes as a surprise, especially since most gamers just assumed that these airports were an area where one could only steal planes, and nothing else. This is just one of the many moments where Rockstar has managed to wow us again with their amazing attention to detail.

8 Easily Steal The Fighter Plane From The 'Impenetrable' Military Base (GTA V)

via gta.wikia.com

The P-996 Lazer Jet Fighter Plane is — aside from being a mouthful — one of the best planes in Grand Theft Auto V, and can be used to absolutely decimate your enemies... provided you can actually escape with the craft without being exploded to oblivion. Thankfully, there's actually a way to get this plane from the military base without raising the alarm.

Make sure that you're playing as Franklin, and are driving a somewhat fast vehicle as well. After reaching the base, activate Franklin's power and take the shortest route towards the jet. If done properly, then you should be able to take off with the jet without even raising the alarm. Enjoy the fireworks!

7 A Site That Reveals All Of The Game's Hidden Secrets (GTA IV)

via gta.wikia.com

Grand Theft Auto IV is full to the brim with a large number of secrets that can be really exhausting to find without any outside help. If you're one of those gaming purists that shy away from walkthroughs, then — as an alternative — you can choose to access a hidden site in the game with a ton of useful information.

The site www.whattheydontwantyoutoknow.com is a conspiracy forum of sorts, that details out pretty much every secret that you can find in the game's vast map. Of course, since this is a Grand Theft Auto game, be prepared for a ton of digging if you actually want to find all the secrets present in this title.

6 'Suggestive' Hotel Lighting (GTA: Vice City & Vice City Stories)

via facepunch.com

D jokes are always funny, no matter what the context might be. This is a sentiment that Rockstar's also familiar with, since they've added a pretty blatant joke in Vice City.

The WK Chariot Hotel (which is tastefully renamed as Van Khoff On The Beach in Vice City Stories) is placed just across the Malibu Club, and features a rather interesting lighting pattern somewhere around midnight.

The lights at the front of the hotel will align to form a shape that can only be described as majestic. , coupled with a spurt of water at the end for good measure. In Vice City Stories, the water fountain effect is removed and the entire immature mural is depicted only with lights.

5 Enter Area 69 Again After The Mission 'Black Project' (GTA: San Andreas)

via gta.wikia.com

Just like the military base in Grand Theft Auto V, Area 69 in San Andreas is also a restricted section in the game's open world that can provide a rather rude surprise to gamers if they happen to fly over this area by mistake. You do end up exploring this area during a certain mission in the game... however, if you still need to satiate your curiosity then you can enter this base again with a nifty exploit.

To perform this particular exploit, you need to drive inside the base with a Freeway and park it next to the vent from where you entered the base for the first time. Prop the bike right next to this entry point and get off so that CJ floats over the vent. If done correctly, then CJ should teleport inside the area — right on top of a minigun.

4 A Massive Prehistoric Skeleton Submerged In The Ocean (GTA V)

via reddit.com

Grand Theft Auto V has its fair share of easter eggs and secrets that will either surprise, confuse or horrify the player once they discover these well-hidden tidbits in the game. In fact, there is one submerged secret in particular that will make the player experience all three of the aforementioned emotions in one go.

The secret is question happens to be a massive skeleton that appears from out of nowhere if you're just roaming around underwater. The argument surrounding this skeletal structure is quite active even now, with some writing it off as a whale's skeleton, while others are pointing to something supernatural instead.

3 Access The 'Blue' Through Porter Tunnel (GTA III)

via youtube.com

When one talks about 'blue hell' in the Grand Theft Auto series, most players generally associate it with the underworld of the game where players can fall into by mistake due to certain texturing and/or collision glitches. This term originated from Grand Theft Auto III, where this underworld had a bluish hue to it as well.

If you're ingenious enough, then this blue hell can actually be utilized to access the areas of Staunton Island and Shoreside Vale long before you gain access to them. The best way to access this area is through the Porter Tunnel, where you can jump through the ceiling and enter this rather trippy landscape (as seen in the image above where Claude forms a trail every time he moves).

2 You Can Hijack — And Subsequently Derail — A Train (GTA: San Andreas)

via youtube.com

Similar to the airports in San Andreas, you can also utilize trains to move from one section of the map to another pretty quickly. However, what you probably didn't know is that you can even hijack trains by entering from the driver's side.

If that wasn't enough to blow your minds, then get this — while you can choose to drive these trains as fast as possible, after a certain point the train will start shaking as a warning of sorts to make you lower the speed. If you choose to ignore this warning, then the train will get derailed as a result, sending you sliding across the countryside.

Don't worry, you won't die... although the same can't be said for the other passengers.

1 The Existence Of An In-Game Bermuda Triangle (GTA: San Andreas)

via youtube.com

Most Grand Theft Auto games have open worlds without any boundaries set in place. This means that you can pretty much swim, fly or sail as far as you want across these water bodies until you inevitably get tired. However, in Grand Theft Auto V, Rockstar decided to add a nifty little trick to stop a player in their tracks if they tried to stretch these boundaries again.

If you happen to fly or sail past the borders of the world for an extended period of time, then in typical Bermuda Triangle fashion your boat will sink, or your plane's engine will fail out of nowhere. This will leave you stranded in the waters — although not for long, since a shark will spawn and snack on your body, causing you to teleport to the nearest hospital.
