When you're not too busy grinding and heisting to earn money in Grand Theft Auto Online, there's an entire story mode to enjoy with lots of colorful characters to meet. Every character in the campaign brings something new to the gameplay, and each is a criminal to some degree or another. After all, they do live in Los Santos, a city positively crawling with ne'er-do-wellers. If you're unfamiliar with the characters in Grand Theft Auto V or simply want a refresher, here's a crash course on the game's main characters and the details about their backgrounds that define who they are. (Warning: spoilers ahead!)
9 Michael de Santa
Michael de Santa, born Michael Townley in 1965 (or 1968; the guy's a mystery) is a ex-bank robber who's forced back into a life of crime when money gets tight. He's arguably the main character of GTAV since he's the one you play as during the introductory mission and it's his storyline the campaign focuses most on. When the game launched in 2013, Michael was 48 years old, but at 6'2", he can certainly still hold his own. It's been a few years since then, and Michael is now 54 years old and still running into trouble.
8 Trevor Philips
Trevor Philips is arguably the most insane character in a game that revolves around psychotic characters. He was born in Canada, and though there is no canon birthdate for him, he claims he "grew up in five states, two countries, fourteen different homes, eight fathers, three care homes, two correctional facilities, one beautiful, damaged flower of a mother" and seems to be in his 40s. While Rockstar isn't too specific about his birthday, they are very specific about his height; Trevor is 6'1¼" tall and definitely the most fun to play.
7 Franklin Clinton
Franklin is the youngest and shortest character in the main trio of protagonists in Grand Theft Auto V. He was born sometime in 1988, which makes him 25 at the game's release and 31 today. Franklin had a troubled childhood with an absent father and an addict of a mother who died before the game's events began. He could have lived a life outside of crime had he wanted to, but he instead grew up to be a street hustler anyway. By the time he was full-grown (6'0") he was a full-on criminal with impressive feats under his belt. It seems to pay off for him for the most part.
6 Amanda de Santa
Amanda de Santa, or Amanda Townley as she was known before Michael's dealings with the FIB got the entire family thrown into witness protection, isn't a playable character, but she's still an important one. She's Michael's wife and as such, some of the smaller missions you go on while playing as Michael feature her. Amanda has no canon height or birthday, but she was born in 1970, which makes her 3 (or 5, depending on which year Michael was really born) years younger than her husband. As the game progresses, Michael and Amanda separate.
5 Jimmy de Santa
Like Amanda, Jimmy isn't a protagonist or playable character, but he's still an important character in Michael's life. He's under 6'2" since he's shorter than Michael when they stand next to each other in the game, but that's the closest Rockstar gives us to a canon height for Jimmy. Rockstar does give a canon birth year of 1993, but there's no birthdate along with it. Assuming Jimmy's birthday hasn't already passed, he was 20 at the time of the game's release and is now 26. With any luck, he doesn't still live at home with his parents, right?
4 Tracey de Santa
Tracey is the last member of the de Santa/Townley family on this list. She's Jimmy's older sister and a pretty entertaining character when you catch her at the right time. She's often seen arguing with her family members. In fact, the first time she appears in the game, she's arguing with Jimmy; her second appearance occurs during a fight with her mother over her boyfriend at the time. Just like her mother and brother, Tracey wasn't given a canon birthdate or height, but she was definitely born in 1991, which makes her 28 in real-time and 22 at the time of the game's release.
3 Devin Weston
Unlike the first few characters on this list, Devin Weston is an antagonistic NPC. He's the main antagonist in Grand Theft Auto V. He's extremely rich and runs various businesses, but makes life pretty difficult for your favorite protagonists. Of course, "difficult" might be an understatement since Weston does send a small army of Merryweather soldiers to Michael's home to murder his wife and daughter in a bout of revenge. Not much is known about Weston other than he dies at age 51 in 2013, which makes his birth year 1962. He has no canon height or birthday, but then again, does anyone really care about Devin Weston?
2 Steve Haines
Devin Weston's partner in crime (quite literally) is a FIB agent and the game's secondary antagonist. He died the same time Devin did, but he was only 38 when he died, which makes his birth year 1975. Once again, Rockstar gives no insight into his height or actual birthday, but what players are privy to is the year he joined the FIB (1993). He's known to be on Devin's payroll and very corrupt despite being a highly-decorated agent for the FIB. Throughout the game, he has the three protagonists of the game carry out plenty of illegal tasks to avoid getting his own hands dirty, but it doesn't save him in the end.
1 Grand Theft Auto Online Protagonist
Each and every player has the opportunity to create their own Grand Theft Auto Online character, which makes each and every character in the online world different and unique. However, every character (as long as they aren't in high heels) stands around 6'1" or 6'2", and as long as you're playing on the PS3 or Xbox 360, you have the ability to choose a birth year between 1973 and 1992, which makes all the characters in the online game mode anywhere from 46 to 27 years old. Even if you don't play on one of those consoles, Rockstar surely won't mind if you use your imagination. GTA is an open-world game, after all. So take all the liberties you want!
