Grand Theft Auto 6 is one of the gaming industry's most anticipated titles and you can't go a day on the internet without another new rumor or supposed leak popping up. The sales success of both Grand Theft Auto 5 and it's online mode have likely given the upcoming sequel a more relaxed development timeline, but that doesn't mean the fanbase isn't fervent for more information regarding Grand Theft Auto 6. Let's take the time to look at everything we know (and hope for) so far for Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto 6.

10 No Rush To Release

If you listen to a video game podcast or follow industry analysts on Twitter, then you'd know that Grand Theft Auto 5 has been one of the best-selling games of the last decade and continues to sell month after month. This is in addition to the vast amounts of revenue the online mode portion of the game titled GTA Online is making. All of this means that Rockstar Games is in no rush to get Grand Theft Auto 6 out to market as they continue to rake in the cash hand-over-fist. In reality, it just depends on when they're ready to make another splash.

9 Plenty Of Rumors

Grand Theft Auto is one of the most popular and profitable video game franchises of all-time, and fans can't get enough. The moment the fifth installment was released, internet forums began to buzz about where the next game will take place. Over the years there have been a good number of rumors and supposed leaks about GTA 6, with some having a bit more substance and proof than others. Some of these rumors suggest a London-based game, whereas others think there's no way it doesn't take place back in the '80s in a bustling return to Vice City.

8 Project Americas

It seems that there's enough smoke in the air to provide a strong case that the rumored project name for GTA 6 being Project Americas is likely true. Internet threads have gone wild thinking that this means the game's map will span the entire United States, which is quite a leap in logic. The more logical tie from name to rumor sits with the supposed narrative leak that the game will have the player going back and forth from Florida to South America in some sort of drug trafficking crime situation. It seems that the show Narcos may have influenced Rockstar Games if true.

7 Female Lead

Though players could create their own female character in GTA Online, the single-player portion of the franchise has never featured a female protagonist. It's unclear whether or not GTA 6 will have one lead character, or multiple characters players change between like in GTA 5. If it is the latter then it'd be a nice mix up for one of them to be a female. With the franchise often reflecting modern society, there's plenty to work with there in terms of writing a strong female lead who's tired of dealing with the world's treatment of women.

6 Teased In 2013

In a 2013 interview with the former President of Rockstar Games' Rockstar North Studio, Leslie Benzies, the development of GTA 6 was confirmed. He stated that they didn't yet have a concrete idea of what the game will be, but the process of getting the wheels turning was well underway. The announcement happening that long ago means the game has been in development for some time and a ton of focus was likely shifted to it as Red Dead Redemption 2 was getting set to release in 2018. This means that we could see the arrival of GTA 6 a lot sooner than we anticipate.

5 Next-Gen

We'll get into this a little more in the next entry, but it's safe to say at this point that GTA 6 will likely be a next-gen console exclusive. By the time the game releases, the new PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X should have built-in install bases that Rockstar Games favors when they're releasing a new title. Fans are hoping an early release on next-gen consoles could result in two new games from the studio in one generation, which would be a welcome change considering current consoles only received a port of GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2.

4 Rough Idea Of Announcement To Release

Rockstar Games is a development studio whose releases feel like a blockbuster moment considering they don't happen too often. If their last three releases are any indication of their timeline in-house, then that means that we should expect to be playing GTA 6 around 22 months after it's first announced. For context, that means that if it is announced on May 1st, 2020 then we should expect to be playing it around January of 2022. With this in mind, you shouldn't expect to be playing the next great Rockstar title for quite a while.

3 New Writers

Early in 2020, the gaming industry was met with the news that Rockstar Games lead and co-founder Dan Houser would be leaving the company. Considering the Houser brothers, and Rockstar Games, in general, is so private, you may not know who he is or why his departure is important. Dan Houser was a lead writer for the studio and was responsible for a lot of the writing and direction of their biggest titles. His departure doesn't mean the writing will suffer, but it does mean that the process for writing GTA 6 will be different.

2 GTA Online

If you think that GTA Online won't be a part of GTA 6, then you haven't been paying attention. The multiplayer mode for Rockstar has generated an insane amount of revenue for the company and continues to make money with no signs of slowing down. It's unclear whether the existing framework of GTA Online will be brought over to the next-gen experience, or if it will start from the ground up. Considering GTA 6 likely takes place in a different location, it's safe to say it won't be a complete 1-to-1 transition even in the best outcome.

1 Will Reflect Modern Politics & Society

Every new entry in the Grand Theft Auto series, at least the mainline ones, focus on modern society and politics and deliver criticism through satire based comedy. In today's current climate of perceived over-sensitivity, many fans are worried that the game simply can't do what it has done in the past. The notion is based on the idea that the game will get blasted upon release by Twitter hate mobs and internet groupthink. If the writing is as well-crafted and funny as it usually is, there should be no worry about this happening.
