Grand Theft Auto V was the 11th best selling game of 2018 despite it celebrating the 5th anniversary of its release in September.

The results are in when it comes to the best-selling games of 2018 in the United States. Some of the entries and their placements were expected while the presence of certain other titles was a little surprising. Despite a back and forth battle between Red Dead Redemption 2 and Call Of Duty: Black Ops 4 over which game had sold more copies, its Rockstar who can officially brag about being number one now that the rankings have been released by The NPD Group.

Considering the release weekend RDR2 had, it's no real surprise. The game totted up an incredible $725 million during those first few days. Meanwhile, the latest COD offering could only manage a measly $500 million. Joking aside, COD's sales were more consistent beyond that first weekend. That's why the race to be crowned 2018's best-selling game was apparently such a close run thing between the top two.

There are plenty of other popular titles that you would expect to be in the top 20. Marvel's Spider-Man at number six, God Of War at eight, and a few of the annual sporting games including Madden, NBA 2K, and FIFA. However, perhaps the most surprising entry on the list was that of Grand Theft Auto V.

Now, don't misunderstand us, GTA V is a terrific game. It might even be the best game of this console generation. However, the latest GTA game was released in September 2013. That's why it's so astounding to see it still selling this well a full five years after it was first released. Talk about longevity. It didn't even just make the cut either, coming in at an impressive 11th. It even managed to outsell Battlefield V.

GTA V wasn't the only game that wasn't released in 2018 to make the top 20. Switch favorites Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Super Mario Odyssey were both on the list too, in 12th and 15th respectively. We would be surprised if those two games are still in the top 20 five years after their initial release, though. They will have likely been replaced by an updated version by then, perhaps on a completely different console.
