Crossplay is the future when it comes to multiplayer games. Allowing people to play together regardless of platform is an enticing deal. If you have a PlayStation, but your friends are on Xbox, then why shouldn't you be able to party up?

Crossplay is becoming more popular as the gaming industry grows. More companies are making it a high priority when developing new titles - especially free-to-play games. Nowadays, you can easily download a game at no (or low) cost and start playing with your friends right away.

10 Super Animal Royale

One of the smaller battle royales on the market is Super Animal Royale. It plays like most battle royales, where you drop into the map and look for weapons, gear, and armor with a color-based loot system. The last animal standing wins.

However, Super Animal Royale has a simpler art style, meaning it looks and runs great on just about every platform. PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch players can all hook up and join a squad. Sync up, complete challenges, and find special loot to unlock new outfits and gun-toting animals.

9 Splitgate

Splitgate is available on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation consoles, and it's free-to-play. Many have likened it to a combination between Portal and Halo, which is a fair comparison. Special weapons litter each map while you try and take out the other team or complete objectives.

However, you are equipped with a portal gun that you can use on special surfaces within each map that allows you to traverse and shoot through portals across the map. Party up with your friends on their platform of choice and start thinking with portals and guns.

8 Among Us

Among Us - Crewmate calling an Emergency Meeting

Among Us is only a free-to-play game on mobile devices, but Innersloth only charges a very small amount on every other platform, making a low barrier of entry. If you haven't heard of Among Us by now, it's a game of deception, where every player is aboard a spaceship and must complete tasks.

There are imposters, whose job is to wipe everyone else out from the server, and you must come together and vote for who you think is suspicious. Among Us is available on all platforms, so you can start accusing your friends whenever and wherever you like.

There are few games that have comeback stories quite like Final Fantasy 14. After a disastrous launch, Square Enix gave it a full relaunch in the form of A Realm Reborn. Now the game is so popular that the company had to pull it from sale for a while because the servers were so full.

This MMO contains a host of content, plenty of expansions to sink your teeth into, and tons of missions that are meant to be played with a group. The game is available on PC, PS4, and PS5 and has full crossplay support. The game has a generous free trial, so you and your friends will have plenty of time to try it out.

6 Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout

Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout took the world by storm when it launched, but its numbers went down after a while. It's likely we'll see a reinvigoration for the game after June 2022, when not only will it be available on the Nintendo Switch, but there will also be full crossplay and cross-progression support.

You can play with your friends across any platform, but you'll also be able to carry your progress from one console to another. Grind some challenges on PC, then boot up your Switch and get some rounds in on-the-go. The game is free-to-play as of the update, too.

5 Dead By Daylight

Dead By Daylight isn't free-to-play, but it's been out so long that it's easy to grab it and some DLC packs for a very low price. The game is an asymmetrical horror experience, where four survivors are pitted against one killer.

Since the game's launch, there have been numerous killers from popular horror films and video games, such as Nemesis from Resident Evil and Michael Myers from Halloween. The game has full crossplay support, meaning you can get a group of survivor friends and test how well you work together in a matter of minutes.

4 Halo: The Master Chief Collection

Halo Master Chief Collection

While Halo Infinite is the newest in Microsoft's popular series, the lack of content has led many to return to Halo: The Master Chief Collection.

This game supports cosmetics that are easier to obtain, multiplayer modes for all games in the collection, a full-fledged Forge mode, a custom games browser, and campaigns for Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 2 Anniversary, Halo 3, Halo 3 ODST, Halo Reach, and Halo 4. This game is cheap to acquire (or free if you have Xbox Game Pass) and allows you to play with your friends via Xbox consoles or PC.

3 Apex Legends

Respawn's battle royale may not have the star power of Fortnite, but its fast gameplay, diverse cast, and detailed maps have given it a large following of its own. Apex Legends takes a lot of the movement mechanics established in the developer's Titanfall series and brought them to a battle royale.

The game is available on all platforms (including Nintendo Switch) and allows easy crossplay between them. The game also allows cross-progression between Steam and Origin, but that's only useful to PC users.

2 Destiny 2

Destiny 2 remains one of the quintessential looter shooter games. The base game is completely free, meaning anyone can download, drop-in, and start learning the ropes. Once you get to the expansions is when you and your friends will need to fork over the cash.

Many have regarded the expansions, such as The Witch Queen, as some of the best content Bungie has ever made (Halo included). If Destiny 2 hooks you, then you will have no shortage of things to do with your friends. The game is available on every platform except for Nintendo Switch.

1 Pokemon Unite

Pokemon Unite has been a breakout hit of sorts for Game Freak. Featuring a large roster of popular Pokemon that grows more by the month, a simple spin on the MOBA genre, and plenty of cosmetics to unlock, there's a lot to like with this game.

Unlike most MOBAs, rounds can be completed within 20 minutes and move very quickly. While Pokemon Unite won't be appearing on PC, PlayStation, or Xbox, the game is available on Nintendo Switch and mobile devices. Being free-to-play on both platforms means that any Pokemon fan can download it today and give it a try.
