A24, the studio behind the upcoming Arthurian legend movie "The Green Knight" is developing a tabletop roleplaying game to go along with it. The Green Knight: A Fantasy Roleplaying Game is currently available for pre-order, and is scheduled to ship by August 7, 2020.

According to an article on the A24 studio website, the studio enlisted the aid of Brooklyn-based professional Dungeons & Dragons game master Dr. Timm Woods to design The Green Knight RPG. Woods graduated from St. John’s University in 2017 with an MA and PhD in English, and a specialty in RPG studies and how they can be used in academic writing classes.

“Games like D&D often get into these questions of, wait a minute, is my adventurer, my hero, a good person? They’re going around beating people up in their homes, and taking their treasure and stuff,” said Woods. “I wanted to create a game where you get to play with this idea, and your character is trying to do the heroic thing or maybe choosing a time, strategically, to do dishonorable things. It’s tough to always make the right decision.”

As of now, very few details about The Green Knight RPG have been released. According to its listing on the A24 online store, it’s an “original tabletop roleplaying game inspired by David Lowery's upcoming fantasy film The Green Knight.” Marked at a retail price of $35.00 USD, the A Quest For Honor Starter Set will get you the Game Master's Guide (with Rules of Play, Official Encounters, and A24 Bonus Quests), a realm map, a set of five character sheets, and a d20.

A successful Investigation roll of the box set photos reveals the five included character sheets dedicated to what seems to be the game’s five classes: Bard, Hunter, Knight, Noble, and Sorcerer. Each character’s Ability stats include Courage, Might, Intellect, Cunning, and Charm. Each Ability score governs three out of a total 15 Skills: Intimidation, Authority, Endurance, Melee Combat, Ranged Combat, Brawn, Folklore, Mysticism, Reason, Vigilance, Intuition, Stealth, Persuasion, Trickery, and Performance.

The character sheets also show an interesting Scale of Honor mechanic, numbered from 1 to 20. You start at Honor 10, with your choices during gameplay earning you Honor or Dishonor. Reaching the max level of 20 Dishonor ends your adventure. The box description calls Dishonor “the ultimate punishment” and seems to hint that there are more ways to fail a quest other than character death.

It also looks as if each character has a set of Special Moves at their disposal, which seems to replace a level-up system. The Hunter character sheet shows their Special Moves to be Stealth Strike, Predator, Eagle Eye, and Grim Dedication. The sheet also shows you only get to choose one Special Move during your journey, although the GM may allow you to use more on any future quests.

Hopefully, we’ll get more exact details about the game before it starts shipping later this year. In the meantime, you can pre-order The Green Knight: A Fantasy Roleplaying Game from the A24 online store.
