Microsoft announced a new twin-stick shooter game, West of Dead, at the Xbox X019 event last night. The Wild West themed shooter will feature the voice talent of the former Hellboy star Ron Perlman.

West of Dead lets the player embody William Mason, an undead cowboy with a Ghost Rider style flaming skull. He awakens in Purgatory – Wyoming, not the Dantean concept of limbo – with no memory of who he is or where he came from, only the memory of a figure in black. To remember his past again, Mason must fight through a number of procedurally generated levels. The game lets you use your tactical skills to fight a number of enemies with clever use of your environment and expert gunplay.

Perlman voices Mason, lending his talents to the cowboy as he fights his way through the gun smoke and darkness of Purgatory to find out the truth. He provides the perfect gravelly voice to the game’s undead hero, which matches the gritty Western Gothic comic book art style of the game.

This is not Perlman’s first foray into video game voice work. Other than reprising his role as Hellboy in the 2008 video game adaptation, he has also voiced classic characters like Conan the Barbarian and Batman. He has also provided narration for almost every Fallout game in the series so far, and delivers the iconic “War Never Changes” speech in each of the main games (except for Fallout 4, where he narrates as a news anchor instead.) He is a veteran in video game voiceover, which, along with his experience on stage and screen, should make him a perfect choice for the role.

West of Dead is set to be released at an unspecified date sometime in 2020, and will be available on the Xbox Game Pass when it launches. For now, it is available to play in beta if you hurry; it leaves beta on November 25th, 2019, so if you don’t try it out before then, you’ll have to wait for the full release. With Perlman adding his talent to the game, this is definitely one to keep an eye on.
