Scared of spiders? Then play Obsidian’s new survival game in Arachnophobia Safe Mode to avoid being mentally scarred for life.

Grounded is now in Steam Early Access where you can get in on the ground floor, so to speak, of Obsidian’s new survival game. Although, it might be more accurate to call it a survival horror game if you have something against bugs, and especially if you’re afraid of spiders.

You see, in Grounded you play as a kid that gets shrunken down to the size of an ant. The game is basically just you trying to survive in your own backyard, scrounging for food, supplies, and home-made weaponry that you can use to fend off predatory insects. That's where the spiders come in.

Obsidian knows that arachnophobia is a fairly common fear that could cause some to put the game down and never pick it up again. Enter Arachnophobia Safe Mode, a new accessibility mode that takes into account the fear of spiders.

Here’s how it works: Arachnophobia Safe Mode is a set of options that make spiders appear less like spiders until the player is no longer terrified of their appearance.

At level 1, spiders are the same as the base game in all their arachnid glory. At level 2, spiders lose half their legs and are reduced to just four-legged bugs. At level 3, spiders lose all their legs and just become floating, fanged bodies, which might still be a little too unsettling.

At level 4, spiders lose their fangs, and at level 5 they lose their spidery bodies and just become floating balls. And level 6, they even lose their textures so that spiders are just these floating objects that look more than a little out of place in the finished game.

You can access Arachnophobia Safe Mode in the game’s accessibility options, along with colorblind mode, subtitles, and various text-to-speech modes. Grounded is out on Steam Early Access now, with a release date expected later this year.
