A Rockstar insider has claimed that the engine powering Grand Theft Auto 6 is "ahead of its time".

Although we know that Rockstar has started development on GTA 6, details regarding it are pretty slim on the ground. That means that it's up to insiders and leakers to drip-feed whatever information they come across.

The latest potential bit of information we can cling onto comes from Rockstar insider and leaker Chris Klippel, who Tweeted about GTA 6's engine and claimed that it was "ahead of its time".

Klippel said, "The new version of the Rockstar Games graphics engine (RAGE9) that will be used for GTA 6 is going to be pretty amazing. I was able to get very positive feedback, we really shouldn't be disappointed on this point. We are talking about an engine ahead of its time."

Klippel doesn't specify what about the engine makes it so advanced, but considering how Red Dead Redemption 2 looked on last-generation consoles with no current generation upgrade applied at all, it makes sense that the next game to come from them on more powerful hardware would look "ahead of its time".

Unlike most other developers, which seem to be moving towards Unreal Engine 5, Rockstar uses its own proprietary engine, the Rockstar Advanced Game Engine, also known as RAGE.

Strangely, Klippel claims in his Tweet that GTA 6 will be using "RAGE9". It's not clear how he's numbered the RAGE iterations as it doesn't seem like Rockstar itself has done so, simply calling it RAGE since its inception for Grand Theft Auto 4.

It also doesn't match the number of games that it has appeared in, as it's appeared in 10 Rockstar games overall, seven if you don't count expansions like Undead Nightmare or the Episodes from Liberty City. Whether that's just an internal name that Rockstar has coined for the engine, or a mistake on Klippel's part is unclear, but it's interesting to note.
