Rockstar Games has always been one of those companies that doesn't play by the rules. The creator of GTA and Red Dead Redemption doesn't attend E3 outside of a few business meetings - it teases its games on its own terms. So, how will it finally announce GTA 6? Some fans think it already has - with a dirt road in Virginia.
We recently got a tease of the next GTA Online update - the biggest one yet - that focuses on a brand-new heist in a new location, playable with friends or even solo. When Rockstar released the tease on its Twitter page, fans noticed something strange: coordinates at the bottom of the video.
These coordinates take you to a mountain trail in Virginia if you type them into Google Maps, and the road looks suspiciously like "VI", the Roman numerals for "6" when oriented correctly. Fans have been in a fit of wild speculation ever since the connection was made.
Obviously, Rockstar wouldn't send its fans to a mountain road in Virginia that looks suspiciously like a Roman 6 for no reason, and so I think there's more to this than tin foil hat conspiracy theories. There's no way Rockstar isn't working on the next installment in its biggest property - one of the best selling series of all time. It's a matter of "when" and not "if".
Personally, I wouldn't read too much into the location of the road itself. Yes, it looks like the number six. No, I doubt the next GTA will be in Virginia.
It's much more likely that we'll be heading back to Vice City for the next GTA, cruising around a fictional take on Miami pursued by crooked cops and cocaine kingpins. I'd love to see Rockstar go back to the brave storytelling of GTA 4 and surprise us with a refreshing protagonist, showing us its world through a new set of eyes. Red Dead Redemption 2 proved that Rockstar can do mature right, so let's have a hard-hitting crime drama that's lighter on the dick jokes and bigger on the emotional gut punches.
