Players of the Grand Theft Auto remastered trilogy have now had a couple of weeks to digest the game, and for the most part, people aren't pleased. The Trilogy has launched in such a sorry state that Rockstar eventually had its proverbial arm twisted into making a public apology. The collection is apparently being fixed, and the first patch for the game has already gone live, fixing more than 60 of its issues.

Those of you playing on PC can address some of those issues before Rockstar gets around to them, at least for now. One of the problems with the remastered version of San Andreas is the lack of fog. That might seem like a minor issue to some players, but when you compare the original game to the new one, you realize just how important fog is to a game with a map that big.

As you can see in the video below courtesy of TJGM, when up on a mountain or flying in a plane, you can clearly see all of San Andreas. That makes the sprawling map look more like a model village. The intention of the fog in the original game was to mask that, which is why removing it is an odd decision. MixMods has created a mod that brings the fog back and even allows you to toggle how thick you want it to be.

As you can see, it makes a real difference. Even though it means you see less of the map, it makes it feel bigger, which is exactly why there is supposed to be fog. What's odd is that the effect is still used by Rockstar in GTA 5, which is why it's strange that it wasn't adopted for The Trilogy.

The only issue with using mods in The Trilogy is the imminent threat that Take-Two, Rockstar's parent company, will issue a DMCA forcing them to be taken down. That has been a running theme throughout 2021. One group of modders responsible for reverse engineering GTA 3 and Vice City has clashed with Take-Two multiple times over the course of the past few months. The group has refused to back down and will go to court with Take-Two in the near future.
