The box art for GTA: The Trilogy has revealed the Nintendo Switch version of the collection will require a download.

Rockstar confirmed last week that when it comes to its upcoming GTA remastered trilogy, the rumors are indeed true. It will be here before the end of the year. In fact, the digital version of the collection will be here in less than three weeks on November 11. The physical version of the game will launch a little less than a month later on December 7.

The Trilogy will be coming to all major platforms, including the Nintendo Switch. However, an image of the box art posted by Target shows it includes those two words every Switch owner hates to see. Well, at least those who like to buy physical copies of games. "Download required". That means not all of the game will be included on the cartridge, and some of it is going to take up precious space on your Switch.

That's obviously not ideal when a regular Switch only has 32GB of storage to begin with. The reveal has also left a bad taste in the mouths of those planning to play The Trilogy on Switch. Listings for the game have the Switch version clocking in at 25.4GB. While that is a lot for a Switch game, it isn't so big that the whole thing can't fit on a single cartridge.

Take The Witcher 3, for example. When CDPR revealed the critically acclaimed game was coming to Switch back in 2019, those planning on picking it up collectively held their breath as they waited for the download required addendum to be revealed. It never came. Instead, the entirety of The Witcher 3 was squeezed onto a 32GB cartridge, no download necessary.

While it's possible for a bigger game to be put onto a bigger cartridge, that is obviously pretty costly for the studio. Rockstar has clearly opted to bypass that additional cost and have those buying GTA's remastered trilogy on Switch download part of the game. If you're picking up the collection on another platform, then it will take up even more room whether you download it digitally or buy a physical copy.
