GTFO is a co-op survival horror game that is brutally punishing even to the most experienced players. In fact, it makes a good claim to being one of the toughest horror games around. But no game is unbeatable, and you'll do a lot better if you don't have to waste time figuring out the basics of how to put together a good run.

So if you've got some teammates lined up who are ready to dive into a terrifying FPS experience then you're in the right place because this list will tell you all the things you need to do to have a chance at succeeding from the very beginning of your time with GTFO.

10 Slow And Steady Wins Every Time

The most important thing to pay attention to is the fact that GTFO is a stealth game. Sure it might use FPS mechanics and even feel like a shooter, but the reality is that if you go in guns blazing then you are quickly going to find yourself in a losing situation and getting overwhelmed just minutes into your run.

Instead, go slowly and carefully. Don't be afraid to pause and assess the situation before advancing. Your objectives might be timed but you won't complete them at all if you rush ahead and get your whole team wiped out.

9 Pay Attention To Your Loadouts

All the weapons in GTFO are effective, but you need to consider which ones work best for you when putting together your loadouts. Pick weapons that you are good with and that isn't going to run out of ammo too quickly when things start to kick off. You don't want to be a sitting duck two minutes after the fighting starts.

Melee weapons all do the same damage regardless so that's down to personal preference but what you do need to think about is the tool you're going to take with you. Ultimately you want to pick something that is efficient for your objectives, but if you're unsure you can always choose the best tool available.

8 Always Use The Terminal

GTFO Dark Tendrils

The Terminal is an invaluable asset to everyone who plays GTFO as it gives you a chance to get information on any items you are searching for in the current area. There are ten commands you can use in total but realistically the ones you will use the most are list, query, and ping.

These commands let you figure out what is in each zone, where the items you need for your objectives are, and ping gives you their exact location once you are in the same zone as the items. All in all, it's a tool that is hard to beat when you want to complete those objectives as quickly as possible.

7 Opening Locks Can Alert Enemies

GTFO Explosion

You'll encounter various locked items such as boxes, lockers, and doors as you explore the maps of GTFO. These contain items like valuable consumables or obstruct your progress forwards so you'll often need to find a way past the locks that are blocking you. And the game gives you two choices: either hack them or break through them.

The trouble is, both of these options risk alerting the sleeping enemies that surround you in GTFO. Failing a hack can trigger alarms that can call in swarms of enemies to your location while breaking a lock is always noisy and risks waking up any enemies close enough to hear you do it. So think carefully about the best way of handling these obstacles when you encounter them, and always be ready for a fight to follow.

6 Communicate With Your Team

GTFO is a game designed to be played cooperatively and as such you need to work as a team with your fellow players, no matter how well you actually know them. This means communicating with your team before you rush on ahead and start waking up enemies.

The best thing you can do is talk about your assigned objectives before any of you start moving off. This makes sure you are all on the same page and gives you an opportunity to plan your moves without trying to work around hordes of sleeping enemies.

5 Staying Still Will Calm Enemies

The sleeping enemies of GTFO will start to aggro if you disturb them with fast movement or loud noises, and when this happens you will see them start to glow. When this happens you can either strike first and hope you're quick enough to take them down before they alert anyone else, or take the stealthier, more patient option and stop for a moment.

If your entire team is stationary and quiet, the aggro level of any alerted enemies will begin to drop again. Wait long enough and it will reset entirely, allowing you another chance at progressing unnoticed or getting close enough to silently melee them to eliminate the threat.

4 Prep The Room Before Opening Alarm Doors

GTFO Sentry Gun Firing

Sometimes you'll encounter a security door that is going to trigger an alarm regardless of what you do. Fortunately, that alarm is only triggered when you interact with the door, so if you spot it in time, you and your team can prepare for the waves of enemies that will follow when the alarm is triggered.

Sentry turrets are invaluable in these situations as they allow you to cover entrances to your current room without risking any of your team. Once you have all your traps set and weapons ready, have a team member access the door and trigger the alarm. Then it's down to you to survive what comes next.

3 Take Alerted Enemies Down Quickly And Quietly

GTFO Objective Firefight

If you're fast enough, it is actually possible to prevent an alerted enemy from waking up any other nearby hostiles. The key is to strike with a charged melee attack to silently bring it down instead of panicking and filling it full of bullets which alerts other enemies regardless.

So if you can stay calm in the face of your enemies for long enough to strike then you can make use of the window of opportunity that GTFO presents you with to avoid turning the game into a bloodbath in a matter of seconds. If not, then reload quickly and open fire on the rest of them.

2 Don't Charge Your Melee Weapon For Too Long

GTFO Tendrils and Monsters

It might seem obvious if you've played a lot of other games but if you haven't then you may not realize that charging a melee attack for too long will cause it to go off automatically, making your character attack unexpectedly. In most games, this isn't an issue, but in GTFO it can spell death for your entire team.

Strike an enemy and you might get away with a lucky stealth kill, but anything else and you're risking making a noise that could alert an entire room of monsters to your presence, turning a perfectly stealthy strategy into a firefight in a matter of seconds.

1 Focus On Your Goals

GTFO Objective

Ultimately, GTFO is about succeeding in your mission and completing the objectives set by the Warden. This means that, regardless of how stealthy you want to be, or how much time you want to spend planning, you always need to be moving towards your objective, otherwise it will all be for nothing.

Either time will run out on your objective or someone will slip up and alert an enemy, but either way, an incomplete objective means a failed mission with little to no reward. And that's not what anyone wants when they are playing a game.
