The Guardians of the Galaxy were once hidden away in a rarely visited corner of Marvel's comic book universe. The decision to give the group its very own movie, and as a part of the MCU no less, was a somewhat confusing one at the time. The decision has paid off in a major way, making Star-Lord and the gang an integral part of the MCU with two movies under their belt and a third one on the horizon, as well as playing a key role in Infinity War and Endgame.

While not linked to the MCU, the Guardians will be taking their next big step later this year via their very own game. Guardians of the Galaxy is launching on all major platforms this October and will feature the same ragtag group from the movies, just not the MCU versions. The events of the game will be nothing like the movies, and it has already been confirmed that they will even have different backstories from the Guardians in the MCU.

Star-Lord didn't get his name from his mom in this universe, he picked it himself after his favorite band of the same name. A fictional band created for the purposes of the game, by the way, so don't go trying to find them just yet. The game is set after an intergalactic war, during which Thanos is killed - at the hands of Drax, no less. That small, but pretty major, piece of information warrants a game of its very own.

Dave Bautista, with the help of James Gunn, has managed to turn Drax into one of Marvel's best-loved side characters. Therein lies the problem. Not that movie-goers love Drax, but that he is never going to get the spotlight he deserves on the big screen. Bautista has even lobbied for it, but also revealed that Guardians of the Galaxy 3 Vol. 3 will be the final time he dons the extensive makeup needed to become The Destroyer.

While entirely different from the game, Drax also has an incredibly interesting back story in the MCU. The whole reason he becomes a Guardian is to hunt and kill Thanos. The Mad Titan was responsible for killing his wife and child, and Drax is dead set on getting revenge. It's a shame that story will never be told in full outside of the comic books.

Square Enix and Eidos Montreal can learn from Disney's mistake not to tell Drax's story, even though they've set him up with an entirely different one. While it has already been confirmed that the Guardians game won't be getting DLC, there has been no word yet on sequels or spin-offs. Understandably so, as everyone involved will want to wait to see how the game performs before committing to more installments.

All signs point to Guardians of the Galaxy doing well, so hopefully there will be more games to come. A sequel would be great, but a prequel in which you follow Drax through the aforementioned war sounds like an incredible idea. That the whole thing could culminate in Drax being the one who tracks down and kills Thanos alone would be enough to get people to play it, especially if the Guardians game is as good as it looks.

The lack of a deeper exploration of the heroes' backstories is one of the many pitfalls Marvel's Avengers has fallen into. Even Ms. Marvel, who is supposed to be the focal point of the game's campaign, not including DLC, doesn't get much of an origin story. While it's too late for Avengers, Square can learn from that mistake and build a fascinating universe for its Guardians of the Galaxy. Plus, give Drax the story he deserves, even if Bautista won't be the one telling it.
