Guardians of the Galaxy's in-game heroes will have very different backstories to the ones fans might be familiar with in the MCU.

The hype for the launch of the very first Guardians of the Galaxy game is really starting to ramp up. It's now only a little more than two months until the Marvel title, developed by Eidos Montreal, arrives on pretty much every platform you could hope for. Even though Square Enix is publishing the game, it will not be connected to live service game Marvel's Avengers in any way.

The game will also not share much in common with the MCU. The game's senior creative director revealed via the PlayStation blog that the unruly heroes will have entirely different backstories than the ones movie fans will be familiar with. Rather than getting his nickname from his mom, Peter Quill will dub himself Star-Lord in homage to his favorite band back on Earth.

If you're struggling to place the band Star-Lord, that's because they technically don't exist outside of Eidos Montreal's upcoming game. The band, complete with an entire album, was fabricated for the purpose of the Guardians' OST. That and a whole host of more familiar tracks from the likes of Kiss and Iron Maiden will add drama to your battles throughout the galaxy.

Star-Lord isn't the only Guardian with a different history. 12 years prior to the events of the game, an intergalactic war took place against the Chitauri. During that war, Drax gets to live out the dream he is chasing throughout his time in the MCU. He kills Thanos. Gamora is still Thanos's adopted daughter in the Guardians' video game universe, but she leaves his side to fight against the Chitauri in the same war.

It all sounds very exciting and the best part of all is Marvel fans awaiting this game with bated breath don't have long to wait. Guardians of the Galaxy is slated to launch on all platforms on October 26, 2021. Until then, you can quench your Marvel gaming thirst by playing through Avengers' free War for Wakanda DLC which dropped last week.
