Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy showed pretty moderate results upon launch, managing to gather almost 10,000 concurrent users on Steam on day one. Such figures are well below that of other recent Eidos Montreal games, including Marvel's Avengers.

According to SteamDB, as of October 27, Guardians of the Galaxy stands at a peak of 9,968 concurrent players on Steam within the first 24 hours with about 5-6 thousand players on average. Things still may change for the game in the upcoming days — after all, its first weekend is just around the bend. Though, it's obviously not the biggest launch of 2021.

Compared to other Square Enix/Eidos Montreal productions, GotG is on the low end of the concurrent player spectrum. For example, despite all the controversy, Marvel's Avengers currently stands at a peak of 31,165 concurrent players — all achieved on day one. 2018's Shadow of the Tomb Raider has similar numbers with its 38,268 peak users. Lastly, fan-favorite Deus Ex: Mankind Divided got an impressive figure of 52,485 simultaneous players on PC on its launch day in August 2016. And it was later shelved for an uncertain term due to somewhat weak sales.

What's promising for Guardians though, is that the majority of players seem to be pretty satisfied with what they got from a Marvel game this time. Based on the first player reactions, the new action-adventure stands at 91% positive reviews. Things may change over the next few days, and it's possible those great reviews will incentive others to pick up the title.

Critics are also impressed with the latest Star-Lord's journey that currently boasts 81 on Metacritic and 82 at OpenCritic. Despite some teething issues, the game is really a joy to play with an exciting story and brilliant soundtrack. Here at TheGamer, we gave it four out of five stars, saying that "it's fun, but it certainly isn't fresh, and for a lot of people, that will be enough."

We still don't know how Guardians will prove itself in the long run, but it sure looks like many players never figured out the game has no connections with Marvel's Avengers – and in fact, is far closer to Marvel's Spider-Man. Hopefully, more fans will look closely enough at Guardians of the Galaxy over time and give it all the attention it deserves.
