The official release of the Gwent card game on mobile devices is inching closer for iOS users, as CD Projekt Red announced that the game will launch on Apple devices on October 29 of this year. Android users will unfortunately be waiting until at least 2020, and we hope to see it sooner rather than later.

Apple users will have several options for where they play Gwent. The iPhone 6S is the oldest model of mobile phone that will run the game, along with anything news. The same can be said of the iPad Mini 4, iPad 5th generation, iPad Air 2, and all versions of the iPad Pro.

For the unfamiliar, Gwent is a free-to-play digital collectible card game (CCG) that released on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One in 2018. The game originated within The Witcher universe, both in the novels by Adrezej Sapkowski and playable in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

Gwent differs from other popular card games like Magic: The Gathering or Hearthstone in that it does not contain a mana system. As a result, unlike most traditional CCGs, card advantage and cycling are far more powerful and win games more often. Rather than seeking to destroy an opponent by bringing their life total down to zero, Gwent tasks players with winning two of three rounds by gaining points called “power” on the board.

Since releasing, Gwent has become an essential component of the developer’s portfolio. Ideally, they will continue building upon the foundation of the game through new expansions and game modes. The goal is, as always, to retain and attract new players who will continually spend on cards and new sets as they release.

CD Projekt Red is also hard at work in the development of Cyberpunk 2077. Following the massive success of Gwent, it seems logical that they attempt and include some manner of CCG within that game as well. With all the hype building for the release of Cyberpunk 2077, thanks in part to an outstanding presentation at E3 with Keanu Reeves, a futuristic, cyberpunk-themed CCG would be a big hit.

For now, Apple users have less than two months to wait before having access to Gwent on their mobile devices, and Android users will simply need to watch with envy until sometime in 2020 when they can finally access the game as well.
