One of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt's gameplay elements is taking up monster contracts as side missions in exchange for some gold. There are also occasional bandits and humanoid enemies that Geralt has to deal with during his journey to find Ciri. But what if all the intense combat was replaced with a friendly game of Gwent instead?

A recent mod for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt effectively replaces all combat in the game with a Gwent duel. Instead of swords clashing or silver ripping through a monster's hide, fights are settled over a few cards instead. Known as Heart of Cards, the mod allows players to engage with any enemy by dueling them in Gwent.

A reference to the famous Yu-Gi-Oh trading card game, the mod was in development back in 2015 until it was abandoned by the original author. After some time, Heart of Cards was picked up by another modder over at Nexusmods, who proceeded to finish the mod and publish it on the website for others to download and install.

According to the mod's description, if Geralt attacks an enemy with his weapons, or if he is the one to get attacked, a game of Gwent opens up. If the player is able to win the game, all enemies within the range of 30 units die. However, if Geralt is the one to lose the card game, he dies. One other thing to note is that it is possible to reduce the kill radius by opening the mod's files via Notepad++ and tinkering with the settings by adjusting the numeric value.

Gwent enthusiasts are certain to appreciate the mod, especially if they play the standalone Gwent: The Witcher Card Game or if they prefer The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt's version more. Nonetheless, defeating some of the most challenging and powerful enemies with a deck of cards is certain to feel like an unusual and unorthodox accomplishment. However, the threat of repetition does present itself, especially if the enemies use the same cards over and over again.
