It's hard to deny that Halo has shaped first-person shooters and online multiplayer over the years. Players loved its bold choices and new ideas, and the franchise reaped the rewards.Related: The Plot Of Halo Explained In 1,000 WordsHalo's system of medals has slowly evolved over the iterations. They weren't even included in the very first game - though the game still acknowledged your achievements a little. Now, there are dozens of medals to earn in every different game mode. If you're looking for details about the kill-streak medals in Halo over the years, you've come to the right place.Updated October 28th, 2021, by Charles Burgar: In preparation for Halo: Infinite's release, we've gone through and updated this article to include additional kill-related medals. Weapon-specific kill medals, objective-oriented kill medals, and other killstreak medals have been accounted for in each main Halo entry on this guide. We've also made some major organizational changes to make this article as easy to navigate and read as possible.

Medal Types In The Halo Games

Halo Infinite Medals

Before we list every medal in each Halo game, it's important to note the immense amount of overlap from each game. Each Halo game, except Halo: CE, features killstreak medals that occur when you kill a certain number of enemies in quick succession. This can range from a double kill all the way to Killionaire (10 kills in a row).

Later Halo titles would go on to add special kill medals and gamemode-specific kill medals. Special kill medals require that you obtain a killstreak while using a specific weapon or vehicle, while gamemode-specific kill medals typically revolve around defeating targets under certain gamemode-specific conditions—holding a flag, while infected, et cetera. We'll be breaking down each medal in all Halo games with these criteria in mind.

Halo 3 came with an evolution to the medal system. Dozens of new medal types were added to acknowledge more specific killstreak conditions, ranging from weapon-specific killstreaks to kills with objects like flags. This was also the first Halo game that allowed players to earn medals through the campaign.

Halo 3 Killstreak Medals

Killstreak medals saw a massive expansion in Halo 3, adding the iconic Killionaire medal amongst other classics. One-life killstreak medals were also added to the campaign, albeit with higher kill requirements.

Virtually every Halo 3 medal was brought back in ODST with the same requirements, so refer to our Halo 3 section for a list of those medals. We'll only be covering new medals for this section of the guide.

Tips For Getting Kill Medals

Halo Multiplayer, gameplay screenshot of player earning Killionaire medal, Hell's Janitor medal

Basic Killing Spree Medals

  • Play the Living Dead game type; it forces zombie opponents to get up close to the Spartans in order to kill them with Energy Swords, so they're easy to pick off without dying yourself
  • Use a DMR
  • Keep an eye on your opponents - you should be able to tell which players like to camp and which players like to run around
  • Play the SWAT game type, since players won't have any shields
  • Aim to surprise opponents from above - always be looking for the high ground

Kills Within 4 Seconds Medals

  • Play the "Swords" variant of Slayer
  • Look for warthogs loaded with players and destroy them with grenades or other methods
  • Play Griffball and kill the players when they spawn together
  • Use vehicles, like Tanks, that allow you to take out many opponents at once
  • Combine Grenades with Mines and other equipment
