A single level test for the PC version of Halo: Reach is currently making its way around the internet, and some players have found ways to access it illegally.

While some players eagerly awaiting the new game have been tempted by the file, which is being distributed illegally, the consequences for downloading it are high and could end in this single level test being the only future Halo content you’ll get chance to play.

Approximately 1,000 Halo fans were recently given the opportunity to playtest a single level from the upcoming PC version of Halo: Reach. The test was opened up to members of the Halo Insider program, which offers community members a chance to participate in playtests in return for providing feedback and insights.

Far more than 1,000 players are eager to get their hands on the game, though, which led to someone making the decision to illegally leak the test online.

As news of the leak broke, a representative from 343 Industries, developers of the franchise, addressed the issue on the Halo forums. The post says:

“Good Morning, It has come to our attention that the Halo Insider flight has been illegally distributed online. If you download or play this illegal copy, we have the right to ban all associated accounts and remove you from all current or future 343 programs. The Microsoft Service Agreement can be found here.”

The link takes you through to the lengthy Microsoft Service Agreement, which sets out the terms players are expected to abide by. The player code of conduct includes the lines “Don’t do anything illegal” and “Don’t circumvent any restrictions on access to or availability of the Services.” These are two points that would be broken by downloading and playing the test level. The consequences for breaking the code of conduct are clearly outlined and include having your account closed and blocked.

It seems 343 Industries is not afraid to utilize this clause if players break the rules. So, if you’ve been tempted by the file, don’t do it. You'd basically be risking your entire Halo playing future for the sake of very limited access to one level.

Halo: Reach is part of the Master Chief Collection and will be released later this year.
