Despite reaching over $322,000 in pledges, the Kickstarter for Hand-Drawn Game Guides has been taken down due to legal issues.

Hand-Drawn Game Guides was a Kickstarter pitched by Philip Summers and Dreamprism Press. The pair aimed to create hand-drawn guides for Nintendo games like Metroid, The Legend of Zelda, Contra, and Ninja Gaiden. The Kickstarter took off after only a month of being up, with over $322,00 at the time of closing.

Philip Summers took to Twitter to announce the closure, saying, "It was always a risk. Tonight I pulled the plug on the Hand-Drawn Game Guides Kickstarter. Yes, for exactly the reason you think it's for. I had hoped that I could successfully navigate any legal trouble, but I wasn't able to do so. Is this thing done for good? I don't know that yet. I'll be finding out in the coming days.

"Of course I'm disappointed, but I completely understand why this happened. It's okay. I'm not mad. I mean, the timing is totally awful and it would have helped if this had happened say three weeks ago but here we are. Hah!"

In a slightly more hopeful Tweet, Dreamprism Press said, "Regarding HDGG, while we’re disappointed by this roadblock, we’re still in the process of figuring out what the future holds for the project. It doesn’t mean it’s over. Please bear with us and stay tuned! We’re more excited than ever to have you along with us for the ride!"

Although the Kickstarter looks like it's shut down for good, both Philip and Dreamprism Press seem to hint that the guides aren't disappearing for good and might be reworked into something else. Some fans have pointed out that the Contra and Ninja Gaiden guides wouldn't necessarily need Nintendo's approval and might still be okay.

Here's a reminder to anyone trying to create fan-made content for Nintendo properties - don't. As much love as you might have for Nintendo games, the company has proven time and time again that it won't hesitate to shut down any unauthorised use of its licence.
