While North America's Harry Potter game was canceled by Niantic, China's Harry Potter game has been setting records since its release last September. Harry Potter: Magic Awakened is the biggest game launch of 2021 in mainland China, according to Niko Partners, with game sales accounting for a 15% jump in NetEase's revenue for the most recent quarter.

And helping those sales (or hurting, depending on how you look at it) might have been a very interesting bug that caused female wizards and witches to show their o-face whenever they used their magic.

Once again, we have Niko Partner analyst for showing us the weird and wonderful side of gaming from halfway around the world. In this case, we also get to learn the meaning of the word "ahegao," which is a Japanese term for the exaggerated facial expressions anime characters have when they're fully aroused.

"So uh, some players of Harry Potter: Magic Awakened (Released in China in Sep) discovered a 'bug' where female characters would make an ahegao face when attacked by magic spells,” explained Niko Partners analyst Daniel Ahmad on Twitter. “NetEase, the dev, has apologized and said it was a bug related to tongues clipping through chins.”

Ahmad goes on to explain that NetEase apologized profusely for the bug, which went viral on Chinese social media, and was especially bad because the same issue didn't seem to affect male characters. NetEase sweetened its apology with some in-game items and currency.

In case this is your first time hearing about the game, Harry Potter: Magic Awakened is a mobile and PC title that launched back in September. An RPG with card-based combat and tons of mini-games, you play as a student witch or wizard attending Hogwarts and wandering around the Harry Potter universe. There are a ton of characters represented in the game, such as Hagrid, Ollivander, and Professor McGonagall, as well as famous locations like Diagon Alley.

Unfortunately, it’s only available in the east, but with Niantic’s Harry Potter game gone, maybe NetEase will think about a western port.
