Harry Potter: Wizards Unite has already been on the market for a year, and Niantic put together some plans to mark the occasion and make July special for players.

You might think that mobile sensations Wizards Unite and Pokémon GO would have taken a backseat for most players, what with the social distancing and lockdown measures the world has been forced to implement in response to the coronavirus pandemic. It has certainly taken a lot of adaptation on Niantic’s part, but both titles have proven to still be enjoyable to play from home.

Adjustments to the way the apps are experienced haven’t come easy, but that’s the great strength of mobile games — updates can happen quickly, keeping players engaged regardless of the circumstances. As Pocket Gamer reports, next week marks the first anniversary of Wizards Unite’s release, and the team is releasing a variety of surprises to celebrate the milestone (in the wake of Brilliant Event: One Year Later part one and two).

Firstly, Niantic/WB Games have published the below infographic, demonstrating just how much the game’s community has achieved over its first twelve months. Collectively, as you can see, fans have visited 2 billion points of interest, walked 400 million kilometers and chugged 850 million potions! Truly magical.

The game may never have taken off in the way that Pokémon GO did (though it had quite the controversial launch itself), but it’s certainly built up quite the reputation for itself and isn’t about to disappear any time soon. The key is to keep building on that momentum though, so what can we expect of Wizards Unite’s second year?

So far, the team are remaining rather tight-lipped, though they have promised regular events and content drops beginning from July. We do know that a new feature is in the works for July, which will allow witches and wizards to increase their abilities with magic and unlock a range of in-app rewards. This is all we know for now, but perhaps something akin to Pokémon GO’s quests is in store?

One thing we can say for sure is that July can’t come soon enough for legions of fans around the world. Let’s kick the game’s second year off with a bang!
