During PlayStation's recent State of Play, we received updates on previously announced games. Among the games shown off was Solar Ash, the recent title from developer Heart Machine.

Solar Ash was announced back in March 2019 as Solar Ash Kingdom. Heart Machine forgoes the 2D art style from Hyper Light Drifter, its first game, and goes for a fully 3D open-world in Solar Ash. At the time, not a lot of information was revealed besides a trailer and confirmation of it coming to the Epic Games Store.

At over three minutes, the new trailer for Solar Ash gives players a good look at the scope of the world and what you can do. The game focuses on Rei, a Voidrunner on a mission to save her world from the Ultravoid, a giant black hole that consumes entire worlds.

During the trailer, Heart Machine creative director Alex Preston said the game is focused on style and fluid gameplay. Gameplay shows off Rei gliding from one area to the next, grappling on platforms, and wall climbing. As you run around environments, it looks like you're skating, which adds to the fluidity Heart Machine is going for.

As for combat, enemies will require precise timing to defeat them. In a post on the PlayStation Blog, Preston goes on to say that you'll encounter larger, more difficult enemies over time. On top of that, you'll have to fight giant creatures that are made of nothing but bone and sludge. During the gameplay trailer, we see Rei climbing a snake-like beast that needs to be defeated in order to save her world.

Solar Ash is just one of several great games coming from publisher Annapurna Interactive this year. During last week's Nintendo Direct, they announced Neon White, a first-person action game where you play as an assassin from hell wreaking havoc in heaven. Other upcoming games include 12 Minutes, Stray, and Maquette.

Solar Ash comes to the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Epic Games Store later this year. You can read our recap of PlayStation's State of Play here if you want to see what else was shown off.
