Few things are as compelling as RPG-focused card games, and Hearthstone’s Mercenary mode is on the top of our list. The main difference between Mercenaries and Constructed is deck building: in Constructed you’d have to create a full deck, while in Mercenaries, you have to bring six mercs to the table to complete RPG-style quests and missions.

To pick one of the following mercenaries you need to spend Mercenary Coins to summon them. Keep in mind it’s 100 for Rare mercs, 300 for Epic, and 500 for Legendary.

10 Xyrella (Caster, Draenei, Rare)

Xyrella casting a spell

The first Mercenary on our list is Xyrella, the Draenei Caster, which can be acquired by finishing the Prologue: Deadmines and defeating Cap’n Hogger.

She brings to the battle a nice 73 health that’ll keep her safe. She also has great abilities such as Atonement, that deals a crisp 20 damage and a +3 damage for every 20 health you restore.

9 Thrall (Protector, Orc, Legendary)

Thrall brandishing his axe

Here’s our first Legendary card on the list, Thrall. Thrall is a tank-like that brings a nice 79 Health to the table. The Warchief orc can be acquired through opening Mercenaries Packs, or by defeating Ursula Windfury during Winterspring.

When building an Orc-centric Mercenary team, Thrall is the merc you want most. Thanks to his For The Horde ability he gives all Orcs a +5 Attack while attacking an enemy himself. Also, After completing Task 2, you’ll obtain the Ring of Strength gives a +8 Health to all friendly Orcs that are attacked by an enemy.

8 Blademaster Samuro (Fighter, Orc, Rare)

Blademaster Samuro coming at you

Blademaster Samuro is a favorite among the Warcraft crowd. A master Orc Fighter, he brings down enemies like flies. If you’re jonesing to add this Mercenary to your party, concentrate on taking down Apothecary Helbrim and Neeru Fireblade in The Barrens player experience.

When using Whirling Blade, you’ll be dealing 10 damage to all enemies, and you’ll gain Immune for the turn. Get to level 30, and you’ll unlock the Honed Blade that gives your Whirling Blade a +4 damage boost.

7 Vol’jin (Caster, Troll, Epic)

Vol'jin attacking a foe

The troll Vol’jin has a certain connection to the shadows; you can see this clearly from all his abilities. When using his ability Shadow Surge, which deals 10 damage, combining it with a shadow combo will deal your enemy 16 damage instead. Pretty neat.

To unlock Vol’jin, you’ll need 300 Vol’jin coins. Defeating Snowclaw during Winterspring gives you a higher chance of finding the Vol’jin coins needed.

6 Ragnaros (Protector, Elemental, Legendary)

Ragnaros pointing towards enemies

Ragnaros is plain scary. He owns his Legendary status above all, with abilities like DIE, INSECTS!, which deals a whopping 22 damage to a random enemy, and, if it’s a death blow, the attack starts over again. That can be catastrophic towards the end of a match.

If you’re looking to get enough Mercenary Coins for Ragnaros, know that you’ll need 500 Ragnaros coins, but if you get a chance to defeat Avalanchan in Winterspring there’s a good chance you’ll get most of the coins needed to summon the Legendary merc.

5 Diablo (Fighter, Demon, Legendary)

Diablo walking towards you

The speed that comes with a fighter is what gives Diablo the edge over other mercenaries. While his ability Fire Stomp doesn't deal much damage, it can be a certain nuisance to your rival: Diablo deals six damage to all enemies, and repeats his attack for each enemy that hasn’t attacked yet.

To expedite Diablo’s coin collection, you can try defeating Emperor Thaurissan or General Drakkisath during the Blackrock Mountain bounties

4 Jaina Proudmoore (Caster, Human, Legendary)

Jaina summoning an elemental

Our first Human on the list, Jaina Proudmoore is a master at Frost and Elemental spells. Her Icicle ability can be a game changer if played with the Taunt Water Elemental. If you’re able to Freeze your enemy with the Taunt, be ready to deal 24 damage thanks to Icicle. If that’s not enough, once you reach level 30, you’ll unlock Frost Shards that add another +5 damage to the attack.

The best way to get Jaina Proudmoore coins would be defeating Garr during the Blackrock Mountain bounties, or Ravak during Alterac Valley.

3 Cairne Bloodhoof (Protector, Tauren, Epic)

Cairne charging a foe

With beautiful 82 health, Cairne Bloodhoof brings honor to the Tauren race. To keep his health up, use Ancestral Uppercut and, for every enemy that hasn’t attacked yet, you restore 8 health. Plus, Cairne receives the Reincarnation Equipment that makes him come back to the field with 40 health after dying the first time when he reaches level 30.

Finding Cairne’s coin should be the top of your plan and, if you’re lucky, you’ll find them by defeating the High Justice Grimstone bounty in Blackrock Mountain.

2 Sylvanas Windrunner (Fighter, Undead, Legendary)

Sylvanas looking for the enemy

In true Undead fashion, Sylvanas Windrunner uses Shadow attacks to take down your enemies, and she also uses her own allies to her own advantage. With Reclaimed Souls, you’ll find that every friendly merc that died in-game will give Sylvanas a +5 attack, so if things are a little tight don’t forget to use it. Also, don’t forget about For The Queen where you get to choose an enemy and have its adjacent allies attack it.

Similarly to Cairne Bloodhoof, Sylvanas coins can be found by defeating High Justice Grimstone in the Blackrock Mountain.

1 Antonidas (Caster, Human, Epic)

Antonidas reading and thinking

Last, but not least, Antonidas may be the only other human in this list, but he is a total opposite to Jaina Proudmoore, Antonidas is a fire-wielding spell caster that knows how to control the flame for maximum damage. With Flamestrike, Antonidas deals 14 damage to all the enemies on the board, and, after Task 2, you’ll receive Circlet of Flame that adds +5 to the attack.

Antonidas needs 300 coins to craft, but if you’re lucky enough you might find the coins by defeating Ursula Windfury in Winterspring.
