Way back in 1963, comic book fans all over the world were introduced to The Avengers, a team that consisted of members spanning a large portion of the Marvel brand. For years, the comics sold millions and fans drooled over copies of their favorite heroes united.

Over the years, the comic world was quivering and ablaze with rumors, questioning if the stories they were reading in comic form would ever make it to the big screen. Although the big budget production companies would take their sweet time in bringing the films to fruition, the day finally came and fans all around the world couldn’t have been happier.

In 2005, with the massive success of Batman Begins, a DC hero, studios everywhere got the message that hero films were back in popular demand, in a big way. Films depicting popular heroes were released in quick succession one after the other and most achieved great success. Iron Man, Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy and the many attempts at a great Hulk film are only a few examples.

So it was in 2012 that the planets aligned and Disney brought the team to the big screen to rave reviews and fans everywhere collectively welcomed the film with open arms. It has spawned numerous sequels, spinoffs and merchandising sales that have broken records … and counting.

Here are 20 memes that will have even the biggest fans of this great franchise laughing their heads off.

20 Stellar Cast

via memecreator

There are many reasons why The Avengers have done well, but one of the main reasons is surely the powerful ensemble cast they’ve assembled, as we believe this meme alludes to.

Who can doubt the potency of Robert Downey Jr.’s stardom? He hit it big in the eighties, has surmounted many difficult obstacles, reinvented himself and is nestled at the top of the Hollywood elite, and it’s all well deserved. Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo bring their special breed of acting to the franchise, as does the rest of the cast.

The whole troupe is a melting pot of talented actors who understand the importance of the team and work together in tandem to make all the characters shine brightly. No matter how large their collective egos seem, they’re in it for the group success as opposed to individual success, and it shows!

19 Of Course He Has Great Hair ... He's a God!

via teganashley-wordpress.com

There’s definitely no denying it … Thor is awesome, and in every way. The character of Thor comes from Norse mythology and he was considered the God of thunder and a protector of the people during the Viking age.

Stan Lee subsequently premiered a heightened version of Thor is his comics as a superhero in 1962, and it was a hit ever since.

The character exuded perfection in every sense of the word, so there was no doubt that when producers for the film franchise were casting, they no doubt needed an actor that embodied that personification.

Enter Chris Hemsworth, the good-looking Aussie actor whose muscular frame and piercing blue eyes demand people to listen to him and take notice, and that’s all without saying a single word. Furthermore, how can anyone deny that he’s got the greatest hair in Hollywood?

Shiny shampoo or just... divinity?

18 He's So Vain But Yet So Cool

via biofuelsinternationalexpo.com

He’s an electronics and engineering genius, he’s filthy rich, he’s got a gorgeous girlfriend … and oh yeah, he’s Iron Man! Is it any wonder he thinks so highly of himself? Tony Stark, the character created by Stan Lee is indeed full of himself. The movies have never hid that particular character trait and the comics haven’t either.

In the films, the character is indeed funny and yes, pretty vain, but at the same time he does risk his life to save the world from threats of all sorts, so maybe we can cut him some slack.

However, the numerous comics and storylines the character has been showcased in show a far deeper character to the one portrayed on screen. It would be cool to see this dissected and shown on screen.

17 Extra Scene Was Almost Better Than The Rest of The Movie!

via ldssmile

How many people have walked out on a movie right at the start of the old credits roll? We know we have. But fans of superhero films learned pretty early that directors like to hide portions or extra scenes at the end of the film credits. These scenes often give away little tidbits of information, or in some cases, actually give away drastic pieces of information crucial to the plot.

Therefore, fans got treated to a great scene when they sat through The Avengers in 2012.

In this case, the scene was actually really funny and saw the cast, in full costume, eating the classic Lebanese dish known as Shawarma. The scene lives on in the minds of Avengers fans everywhere and shows their heroes in a very different and quirky light.

16 Brother ... You BETTER Not Be Handin' Me No 3D Glasses!

via quora

Every now and again, a meme comes along that can shatter all other memes. You know what we’re talking about. You’re scrolling down your home page on Facebook, your day isn’t going exactly as planned and all of a sudden, there it is … a picture—probably with a well-known character on it and maybe even one you like—and it’s got a few words scrawled across it.

We’re sure you’ve been through much of the same dear readers, and no doubt you can see the hilarity in this meme. Poor guy can’t watch a movie in 3D because he’s got an eye patch, despite the fact that he has just saved the free world!

Get it? There you go ... go ahead, laugh it up. We'll give you a moment.

15 A Little Too Real

Christopher Nolan’s reboot of the Superman franchise was indeed successful, otherwise it never would have spawned the Batman Vs. Superman movie that followed a few years later. But it definitely had some glaring problems that may have been overlooked by writers of the film.

Unfortunately, the final act has gone down in a bit of infamy. As opposed to saving lives and saving the fictional city of Metropolis, Superman stops at nothing as he battles his foe and the destruction of his beloved city is extensive.

It left viewers with one question reverberating in their minds … shouldn’t Superman have prevented such destruction?

Producers may have been going for a sense of realism, as they had in the Batman trilogy, helmed by Nolan, but what they forgot was … we’re watching a film about an alien that looks like us and has super powers that are impossible. Leave the realism where it belongs.

14 Beauty Is In The Eye of He Who Holds The Remote

via weknowmemes

It is no doubt at all that Scarlett Johansson is indeed a ravishing beauty. Not to mention the fact that she is thoroughly talented at her chosen profession as an actress. With such film credits as : A Love Song For Bobby Long, The Island, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, The Nanny Diaries and many more, who can doubt her dedication to her work?

But what more than her dedication is her willingness to portray an array of characters that span the human condition from one extreme to another. In The Avengers and the many sequels and spin-offs, she plays the character of Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow perfectly and leaves nothing to be desired.

But all seriousness aside for now … it sure is funny when we pause a movie and catch actors making funny faces, isn’t it?

13 More Than Vain

Talk about Obsessive Compulsion Disorder! Apart from being very sure of himself and his accomplishments, the character of Tony Stark also had his hang-ups, and a lot of them at that. He was by no means clinically OCD--that’s a serious and different matter altogether--but he obsessed over the smallest things and had the strictest rules to boot.

The fact that he didn’t like to be handed things is just the tip of the iceberg.

He had his own unique ways of doing things and was quirky to say the least. Well, maybe that’s what comes with being a genius and all. We’re sure it makes things difficult for the people around him, but hey they can handle it … they’re Avengers, aren’t they?

12 Awesome Fan Base

via weknowmemes

With any epic franchise come epic fans. The list is huge … Star Wars, Star Trek, Harry Potter, Lord of The Rings and now, The Avengers. Flocks and flocks of people have crowded theatres all over the world in order to watch their favorite characters portrayed in numerous blockbuster films such as these.

In some cases watching films like these just isn’t simply viewing a film anymore. It’s an outright event. Just like all those awesome films before it, fans come to the theater dressed as their favorite characters, or in the case of the dude in the meme, all his favorite characters (maybe he had a hard time choosing, poor guy).

Regardless, this costume is enough to make even the most serious of Avengers chuckle.

11 Bump In The Night

via me.me

This is another of those examples of hitting pause on a film at just the right moment to catch a weird expression on an actor’s face. Hemsworth’s expression is priceless here, but the face he’s making and the meme itself call to mind an all-too-intriguing question: If you did hear a noise in the night and you were all alone, which Avenger would you want by your side?

The heroes we watch on TV and film inevitably make their way into our subconscious and they nestle there until the time comes for them to surface.

You don’t believe us. Well, the next time you’re home alone and something goes bump in the night, remember this as you imagine Thor by your side as you check that back closet.

10 Hammer Of The Gods

via vitamin-ha

The Hammer in the Thor and Avengers films has its very own characteristics. In many scenes it causes audiences to laugh, especially as Chris Hemsworth plays it off from scene to scene. In others it has fans sitting in awe at all its might.

It is rare that a prop in a film will have that much influence on the viewers, but it does happen in film and TV from time to time. We’re sure that Harry Potter fans are unlikely to forget Harry’s wand or the infamous Marauder’s Map. What about Rambo’s unforgettable knife?

Props help tell the story, especially all-important ones. And as for Thor and his Hammer of The Gods, the story, or his myth just wouldn’t be the same without it, now would it?

9 Original Franchise

via whatculture.com

The first two instalments in the Sam Raimi Trilogy of Spiderman films were indeed a success. However, the third instalment received harsh reviews and the director and the plaintive public weren’t wrong. The third film fell short of expectations and although, Raimi wanted to follow the film with a fourth, fifth and possibly sixth film, he and Sony couldn’t seem to agree on script ideas.

The franchise has been since rebooted, and has enjoyed moderate to good success.

When the first few Avengers films came to fruition, many fans of the Marvel universe wondered if Spiderman, who is definitely involved in the troupe in the comics, would make an appearance. And, would Tobey McGuire be reprising his role?

Fans were disappointed that it wasn’t the case at first, hence the hilarity of this meme.

8 The Camera Adds 10 Pounds ... Of Muscle!

via amino apps

Hollywood is full of actors who are ripped to shreds. It’s been that way since the fitness revolution of the late 70s inspired by none other than the Austrian Oak himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger. For generations, actors have been packing on the muscle to impress audiences all around the world, and impressed they have been. From Stallone in the Rocky films to Jean Claude Van Damme in “Kickboxer,” audiences have been enjoying and respecting the muscular bodies showcased in such Hollywood films.

But the question has always been posed: Is it all real? So many muscular actors have been put under the microscope and asked the questions, “do you take steroids? Are all those muscles only slight tricks of the camera work?”

These questions still show up strongly in the press today, and as can be seen by this meme, it seems Captain America’s T-shirt has some growth hormone thrown into the fabric.

7 Good Old Samuel L. Jackson

via powet.tv

Here’s an actor that can play any character that’s thrown his way. He’s proven time and time again that he has the acting chops to star in any genre of film. From comedy, to noir, to action and even to the melodramatic, Samuel L. Jackson delivers every time out.

In The Avengers, he plays Nick Fury and plays the comic book character to perfection, calling on all his aforementioned skills as an actor.

Born in 1948, he started acting in 1972, getting his big break in big budget feature films in 1990 in Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas. Other notable work includes: Pulp Fiction, Jurassic Park and of course the Star Wars prequels. He is an obvious choice for any film or franchise. He’s starred in a multitude of films, numbering in the 100s.

So yeah, we agree that Samuel L Jackson can do whatever his heart desires, international waters or no.

6 Branch Extension

via comediva

It isn’t any wonder that a successful franchise just keeps on giving. From merchandising to sequels, a great franchise is a license to print money in any shape, way or form. That’s often why films such as The Avengers can be used for any multitude of endorsements as it has in the recent past.

The above reference is funny as it calls on a very famous scene from another popular film, Mean Girls, in which the character of Karen Smith, played by Amanda Seyfried proclaims that … “on Wednesdays, we wear pink.” The scene is quite famous amongst circles of Mean Girls fans everywhere and it’s really funny to see The Avengers painted in that same light.

However, in all seriousness, and if no one’s ever thought of it before, it would be an awesome slogan for Breast Cancer Awareness Month—especially coming from heroes such as them.

5 Show Me The Money!

via quickmeme

The level of competition in the big budget film industry is no doubt fierce. With so many movies opening on similar dates, all production companies are fighting for audiences and that top spot.

Both Marvel and DC films have no doubt opened to amazing successes on their first weekends in theaters. Some have dwindled after just a few short weeks, and some have managed to stay on top, week after week.

The Avengers as well as its spin-offs and sequels have indeed enjoyed a long time at the top, as this meme shows. It also alludes to the fact that The Avengers opened about 2 months before the final installment in the Nolan directed Batman films, The Dark Knight Rises, and as you can see, it definitely made a lot of money and ultimately out-grossed The Dark Knight Rises by about 400 million.

4 Star Struck

via tumblr

When we saw this meme here at The Gamer, we couldn’t stop laughing and we just knew you’d find it equally hilarious. Mark Ruffalo’s face is priceless in all three images shown in the meme. We wonder if the photographs were doctored in any way, but the faces do seem genuine, and if they are, it looks like Mark doesn’t get out all that much.

It seems like just yesterday that Ruffalo was making the scene in You Can Count on Me, where critics were calling him the next Marlon Brando.

Now 50, the star has many great films to his name. In The Avengers, he plays a version of Bruce Banner that the audience has rarely seen. As opposed to the brooding, depressed character being shown, in Ruffalo’s hands, there are many moments of levity and the audience has definitely appreciated the change.

Go ahead, look at the meme again. You know you want to.

3 Oh Loki

via pinterest

What’s a superhero blockbuster without a great villain?

You guessed it: just a bunch of grown men running around in expensive garb shooting at nothing.

Epic villains are what show the heroes in such an astonishing light. Han Solo and Luke Skywalker would have been nothing without Darth Vader. Harry Potter would have been a simple student of wizardry without Voldemort, and well how can we forget Tom of Tom and Jerry? Without him, Jerry would have simply been a house pest and nothing more.

In Thor and The Avengers, Loki plays the part of evildoer quite well, and actor Tom Hiddleston, of War Horse and Midnight in Paris, plays the character exceptionally well. The English actor has been acting since 2001 and his rise to fame isn’t any wonder to anyone that has seen him work.

2 Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda...

via pinterest

Fans across the globe have often wondered why the Spider-Man character joined the cast of The Avengers so late.

Tom Holland, who played Spider-Man most recently in Captain America: Civil War and Spider-Man: Homecoming, did a fair job of keeping up with an already comfortable cast. He received the BAFTA Rising Star Award and has acted in other numerous blockbusters over the last few years, including In The Heart of The Sea with fellow Avengers star, Chris Hemsworth.

Two other actors donned the Spidey suit in recent years: Tobey Maguire and Adam Garfield, and we’re sure we all have our favorite incarnations of Spider-Man, but it’s just so good to see the character finally be a part of the team. Otherwise, the days would have definitely been bleak indeed for good old Spidey, as the meme suggests.

1 Thor Across The Modern Age

via kayak wallpaper

In 1988, The Incredible Hulk starring Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno returned to television in a made for TV film. It was appropriately called The Incredible Hulk Returns. In it, The Hulk teams up with none other than the Valhalla god himself and things get dicey almost from the get-go.

Thor was played by Eric Allan Kramer, a muscle-bound character actor who has acted in Roseanne, Wings, Mad About You and many feature films.

It may seem cheesy nowadays, but at the time, the film was a huge success, out grossing expectations and even doing better than anything else on TV the night it aired. Many edits were made to the modern version of the Norse god, as we're sure fans have noticed, but Thor remains among our top favorites!
