As a role-playing game, The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim astonished players with its various quests and stunning detail, but that doesn't mean it's all serious. Although the vanilla version of The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim can be quite dour in tone, there are a ton of hilarious mechanics and meme-worthy pieces of dialogue that make you chuckle, even when you're trying to save the world.

Funny Skyrim mods take the bones of Skyrim and exploit it ruthlessly, turning the grim world into a patchwork of hilarity. They may not be everyone's cup of tea, but these funniest Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim mods are worth looking into if only to give you a good chuckle.

Updated August 22, 2022 by Dan Christmann: The Skyrim modding community is as strong as it's ever been, and while there aren't as many mods being made as there used to be, they are arguably more substantial. With Mods like Together Reborn adding multiplayer and Shadow of Skyrim tacking on the nemesis system to Bethesda's beloved classic, you can keep coming back to the game over and over for fresh experiences.

These aren't those mods, though. Instead of adding replay value immersion, they usually break the game or add silly visual gags for laughs. That doesn't make them any less worthwhile, though. Sometimes, you want to be the hero of a quest of epic proportions. Other times, you just want to walk around while mud crabs shout profanities at you.

20 WereChair

Skyrim Werechair

Have you ever wanted to be a Lycanthrope, but hoped that you could turn into something more domestic? DigitalLion's WereChair mod has got you covered. Instead of turning into a werewolf under the light of the full moon, this silly little mod skins your character into a growling, soon-to-be blood-encrusted chair.

The best thing about the mod is how NPCs react to it, which is to say that they react exactly the same as if a hulking beast full of feral energy had attacked them. The mod doesn't change the sound either, so it's almost like becoming a mimic from Dark Souls, but with more giggling.

19 Divine Punishment For Mention Of Arrow In The Knee

Skyrim Divine Punishment for mention of arrows in knees

Every guard in the land of Skyrim at one time took an arrow to the knee, and they refuse to shut up about it. Though the phrase was meme-worthy at first, Skyrim is over ten years old now, and some of you haven't stopped playing it. After all that time, hearing about every patella-sniping incident in the land gets old.

Fortunately, modder toaDime has created a mod that will strike guards dead if they even think of mentioning their old war wounds. It's not only satisfying to watch lightning strike them down at random moments but thinking about the implications here makes it even funnier. Even the Gods are sick of hearing about it, Talos be praised.

18 Staff Of Sweet Rolls

Skyrim Staff of Sweet Rolls

Alteration magic in Skyrim is severely lacking. This isn't to say that it's a bad thing to put your hard-won skill points into. Spells like Ironflesh and Detect Dead give you some great advantages over whatever Dwermer or aberration decides to pop out at you from the shadows. But you can't turn people into sweet rolls, and for that Bethesda may never be forgiven.

Modder Nebior saw this oversight, however, and decided to do something about it. Enter their Staff Mods, which effectively turn enemies and friends into inanimate objects. There are about thirteen different staves that can change people into anything from cheese to piles of salt. The staff of sweet rolls is the best, though. There's nothing like turning a giant into a gooey, icing-drenched pastry.

17 Brhuce Hammar- Legacy

Skyrim Brhuce Hammar

One of the most ambitious mods on this list, Team Brhuce's unhinged addition to Skyrim comes complete with several unique areas, five new quests, and a new fully voiced companion. This companion also happens to be a whiny, arrogant jerk who likes breaking the fourth wall at your expense, but that's kind of Brhuce's charm.

Accompanying your new, extremely powerful companion on his adventures takes you to some hilarious places, like a mountain made entirely out of sweet rolls. You'll also get a mechanical horse, and get to fight huge monsters from the cockpit of an even bigger robot. Some mods break the game's immersion, but Brhuce Hammar-Legacy takes it, smashes it on the ground, and stomps on it until it stops moving.

16 Katamari Dovahkiin

Katamari Dovakiin Mod

If Octodad and Gary's Mod have taught us anything, it's that ragdoll physics are inherently funny. Skyrim gets in on this action too, if unintentionally, when it allows you to dragon shout people off mountainsides. Even death can be funny if it means being thrown into the sky like a discount rocket on launch day.

Verterion's Katamari Dovahkiin mod takes this hilarity and turns it up to eleven by giving you a spell that immediately drags everyone in the area and collects them in a mound of arms and torsos. You'll drag the bodies of Skyrim's proud citizens behind you like so much ballast, and jettison them off in a dozen directions after you cancel the spell. It doesn't add anything to the game, really, but watching Nazieem rolling along behind you down the steps of Whiterun is one of the funniest things you've ever seen.

15 Swearing Mudcrabs

Skyrim Swearing Mudcrab attacking player

Mudcrabs seem to have received the short end of the stick when it comes to being taken seriously, due to how many mods change their appearance and sound. The Swearing Mudcrabs mod for instance gives them the ability to finally express just how incredibly fed up they are with absolutely everything.

Next time you find yourself traversing the swamplands of Skyrim, don't be surprised by the approaching sound of profanities as you turn around to notice an army of Mudcrabs heading your way. Just another beautiful day in Skyrim.

14 ProjectMLG

Skyrim screenshot of dead player.

Ah, the early 2010s. It was a different time. MLG quickscope jokes were a real thing back then, which is why it's no wonder so many of the references of that time made it into this fever dream of an audio mod that combines the best (and worst) memes and audio references of its period.

Sad music will play upon your death, including Jason Derulo's "Whatcha Say". Even the main theme of Skyrim has been remixed with to an MLG highlight video style, certain to get you pumped to hit those headshots. There are so many memes and references tied into this mod that it's best just to give it a shot and play around with it, to get the full experience.

13 Daedric Punishment

Skyrim Guard in snowy city

Tired of those annoying Skyrim guards disrespecting and making fun of the Dragonborn? Anyone would be. Luckily, there's a way to put an end to this blatant clownery by installing a mod that lets players punish guards forever mentioning stolen sweet rolls ever again.

Next time a guard foolish enough to approach you has the guts to patronize you, they will be punished by Sheogorath's wrath, and rightfully so. Sit back and relax as justice is finally served by everyone's favorite Daedric Lord.

12 Scream Of Wilhelm

Skyrim Scream Of Wilhelm

Skyrim is an iconic game, and an iconic game needs iconic sounds. What could be more influential and central to pop culture in general that the scream of Wilhelm, which is an overused scream track found in just about any action movie where things get a little bit out of control?

Now, thanks to this mod, players can enjoy Wilhelm's scream whenever they slay an enemy in Skyrim. It might get incredibly annoying and tiring after a while since nearly every enemy in the game will suddenly adopt Wilhelm's voice, but that's another issue for another time.

11 Project P.E.W.

Skyrim Project PEW

Speaking of funny and empowering sounds, there's nothing quite like shooting an arrow in Skyrim. The twang of the bow and the sound of the arrow whizzing through the air just has that special something, but it also seems to be missing a hint of 'funny'.

RELATED: Games Where Things Go Wrong Right From The Start

Project PEW comes to the rescue, by finally providing stealth archers and bowmen of Skyrim the best, most ideal sound effect when shooting an arrow. Nothing like a small, shy "pew" whenever the Dragonborn pelts their enemies with iron arrows or tries to land a shot on a dragon four times his size.

10 Mysterious Coffee Cup (Game Of Thrones)

Skyrim Mysterious Coffee Cup Mod

This mod is perhaps the most useless in the game. If anything, the mod adds comfort for the betterment of Skyrim's environment. The person who created this mod must be a coffee lover. From what we can surmise, the coffee cup is supposed to add to Skyrim's randomness.

The purpose of the mysterious coffee cup mod is to replicate what happened in a recent episode of Game of Thrones. Someone accidentally left their coffee cup on set during Game of Throne's fourth episode of the final season. This random coffee cup is way out of place and is too hilarious.

9 Dwemer Skyship Fully Flyable

Skyrim Dwemer Skyship

A ship that resembles what someone would see in BioShock Infinite soars high in the air. Possibly, this is the most random thing someone could think of to do in Skyrim. At least a ship like this will provide a vantage point for the lands of Skyrim.

This ship is not display-only, as players can take the helm and steer this ship to a destination of their choice. Perhaps a helicopter or airplane would have been a better choice. The Dwemer Skyship is useful for transportation, but then again, how would you land this behemoth?

8 Macho Dragons

Skyrim Macho Dragon

One unusual mod changes the appearance of Skyrim's dragons to Randy "Macho Man" Savage, one of the greatest wrestlers to ever step in the ring. Even if you're not a fan of Randy Savage, one can find humor in this peculiar dragon.

RELATED: Absolute Best RPGs Of The 2000s

Randy "Macho Man" Savage passed away in 2011 from a heart attack. This mod is a fitting ode to Randy "Macho Man" Savage, even if it seems entirely out of place. Macho dragons do not do more damage, but they are more amusing and shout the Macho Man's signature phrases. The cream always rises to the top.

7 This Is Sparta (Replaces "Fus Ro Dah")

Skyrim This is Sparta Mod

Sure, "Fus Ro Dah" is the most popular phrase and shout in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim nomenclature. "This Is Sparta," however, is ten times cooler than "Fus Ro Dah."

Being able to recreate the most famous scene from the movie 300 makes downloading this mod hilarious and worth it. Download the "This Is Sparta" mod—it will provide a long session of senseless enjoyment. It also created some of the funniest videos involving The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

6 Posh Mudcrabs

Skyrim Posh Mudcrab

Seeing posh mud crabs in the world of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is a true delight. Some will find humor in seeing mud crabs that are high class. According to this mod's description, this "Replaces the models of all mud crabs in the game with a mud crab with a top hat and monocle."

Similar to the Monopoly man, Rich Uncle Pennybags, these mud crabs are posh. Nobody could have predicted someone would make this awesome Skyrim mod.

5 Clumsykiin - A Ragdoll Mod

Skyrim Ragdoll Mod

A ragdoll mod in the world of Skyrim could provide hours of enjoyment. Make your character fall in different ways with this mod.

RELATED: Skyrim: The Best Holds To Live In, Ranked

As detailed by Clumskiin's mod page, "Clumsykiin adds a spell tome named 'The Dexterous and You.' Once consumed, the tome grants you the lesser power 'Clumsiness.' Whenever you use this power, your character will ragdoll, and hilarity will generally ensue." This spell is too hilarious, and it was a no-brainer to include this laughable mod that changes you into a ragdoll.

4 Zoidberg Mudcrab Replacer For Skyrim

Skyrim Zoidberg Mudcrab

Surely a Futurama mod couldn't go wrong in the game of Skyrim. Replacing mud crabs with Zoidberg could be the most awesome mod of all time. The only tricky part would be slaying the mud crab, knowing that it is the beloved Zoidberg from Futurama.

Zoidberg is supposed to be a doctor in the show, even if he is incompetent at times. Zoidberg is not a mud crab in Futurama—he is an alien known as a "Decapodian." Skyrim meets Futurama in this too-funny mod.

3 Bear Musician

Skyrim Bear Musician

Watching a bear play a musical instrument has never looked so funny. Sort of like something you might see at Splash Mountain in Disneyland bears in Skyrim will play instruments after downloading this mod. This pleasant version of a bear is not something you would see in the vanilla version, but it should be.

According to this mod's download page, "The name of this melody is Misirlou." Most people would expect the bear to attack players, but it only seems to attack NPCs in Skyrim. It attacks by swinging its musical instrument.

2 Super Skyrim Bros.

Super Skyrm Bros Mod

Why play Skyrim when you can play Super Skyrim Bros.? This funny picture was taken from a mod in The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim. Defeating Goombas has never felt so good as it does in the Super Skyrim Bros. mod. This mod could provide hours of hilarious fun.

RELATED: Must-Have Mods For Skyrim VR

In Super Skyrim Bros., "Princess Toadstool has been captured by Bowser. Embark on an all-new journey through the Mushroom Kingdom to save her from his evil clutches." This map is a surreal Skyrim/Nintendo world that was ingeniously created by the mod's creator.

1 Uncle Sheogorath's Really Helpful Hints And Tips

Skyrim Loading screen with Sheogorath's tips

Instead of Skyrim's boring tips during loading screens, this mod brings new tips from Sheogorath, the Daedric Prince of Madness. The tip in the above photo has nothing to do with Skyrim or anything, but it is a message filled with hilarity. The tip says, "The neck bone's connected to the thigh bone. The thigh bone's connected to the knuckle bone."

This is only one of the messages displayed during loading screens in the Uncle Sheogorath's Really Helpful Hints And Tips mod. If anything, the mod makes nice changes from the game's usual dull tips.
