It has finally happened. TheGamer has stepped boldly into the late ‘00s with the latest technological craze to hit the internet— I’m talking about GIFs. Our cultural ascendancy is complete. In such an auspicious time, there is no better resource than to quote from than the good book:

“If you then, being evil, know how to give good GIFs to your children, how much more will your Father give The Spirit to those who ask Him?”

I couldn’t have said it better. In a way, I have been preparing for this day for the last ten years. As I wasted money on an English Lit. Degree while browsing GIFs in class, I knew I was preparing for something greater. Well, look at me now, mom and dad. I have assembled some of the funniest movie GIFs ever made all on one page. It’s likely you have seen some of these before. You will meet those GIFs as an old friend. Others will be new to you. You will laugh and cry and be moved. Jokes aside, GIFs are wonderful because they’re micro-versions of cinema. At its core, movies are just different shots which make meaning when place next to each other. Far from being frivolous wastes of time, GIFs exemplify the power of this effect and how all of us can be filmmakers. They’re also hilarious, sure.

Whether you pronounce if GIFF or JIFF, you’re bound to love these 25 Hilarious GIFs.

25 The Zabenya Revolution

Buzfeed

Rafiki finally accomplishes what everyone in The Lion King has been trying to do forever: get rid of that annoying brat Simba. If you watch this and think it doesn’t make sense, allow me to put this to you: what makes sense about a bunch of animals who get eaten by lions lining up to worship lions and then singing songs about how them getting eaten is the circle of life? Right? It’s only reasonable then that Rafiki would seize the opportunity to overthrow the king and usurp the throne. Seen from this perspective, Scar is the good guy. Bet you didn’t think I was going to ruin your entire childhood with this GIF commentary, did you? Haha just kidding. Nobody is reading this. You came for the funny moving pictures.

24 Bambi On Ice

Imgur

I don’t know why someone felt compelled to make this, but I guess I could be saying that for over half the entries on this list. And I love it. It’s so mean-spirited considering Bambi probably recently lost his mom. Free Willy comes along and proves that Man is not the greatest foe to animals, it’s whales. It looks like Bambi and Thumper are fish food. Poor Thumper’s little rabbit heart will thump no more. I don’t know why those with dark senses of humor (hello) think it’s so funny to make fun of Bambi. I guess it’s because he is so precious and innocent that he makes such a perfect target for wanton acts.

23 A Different Kind Of Spell, Harry Potter

Imgur

Allow me to inaugurate this new era of GIFs with a recent favorite of mine: a mash-up GIF between Harry Potter and a European arthouse film. Splicing these two movies together creates a new narrative that is WRONG…. but hysterical. Ron and Harry are innocently enjoying their ride on the Hogwarts Express when Ron catches the eye of a woman who has an altogether different thing in mind. This is a whole new kind of magic the boys have never encountered before. For those of you who may not know, the second movie here is made by a filmmaker named Lars Von Trier. He’s a controversial Danish filmmaker known for his bleak and depressing nihilistic meditations on the human experience. Good times!

22 Elsa Meets Independance Day

Giphy

Elsa! What the heck! You’re supposed to CONCEAL not FEEL. Wow, the Arendelle monarchy really will go to any length to crush any budding democracies. I can’t believe Elsa is such a bad person. Then again, depending on your political allegiances towards the modern White House, this GIF is either a doomsday scenario or a godsend. Just kidding. The mere implication of blowing up the current White House is no laughing matter. The NSA will put you on a list for this, Elsa. I mean, how would you even do it anyway? Are there plans in place for this sorta thing? It’s not a laughing matter! Like, what would a timetable look like? NOT A LAUGHING MATTER.

21 The Hills Are Alive... But Not For Long

Giphy

“The Hills are alive… WITH THE SOUND OF SCREAMING.” Julie Andrews has seen to that. If there’s one thing The Sound of Music needed 100% more of, it’s heavy-duty firepower. Imagine if Julie Andrews was packing in both this movie and Mary Poppins? The movies would be over in two seconds. In both films, Julie Andrews has some form of a nanny role over her wards. In both films, she teaches the kids valuable life lessons through the power of music. But what if she had the power of a semi-automatic? That’s WAY more effective at getting a whiny kid to go to bed. And one of the main plot points of The Sound of Music is the loss of her Austrian homeland. I bet packing Julie Andrews wouldn’t take that lying down.

20 Her Hips DO Lie

HilariousGIFs

Now you may want to watch this video closer… for science. Finally. It all makes sense. Shakira’s crazy hips are the result of a Tom and Jerry cartoonish magnet.

It would seem that… *removes sunglasses* Shakira’s hips do lie. YEEEAHHHHH—

See, this is what I love about a good GIF. It would have never occurred to me to stick these two images together. But someone somewhere with too much time on their hands saw both the Shakira video and the old Tom and Jerry cartoon and put two and two together. I’m not being flippant. It’s always eye-opening to get a window into how other minds work differently than yours and the connections they make. Yes, I got all that from a Shakira GIF.

19 Quickest End To A Disney Film

Smosh

The premise of Mulan is based on ancient Chinese folklore that’s just so crazy, it may have really happened. In an ancient war, a fabled woman named Mulan was said to have Mrs. Doubtfire’d her way into the male-only army and helped lead the cause to victory. Perhaps the Disney version had slightly more songs and slightly less pillaging than the real thing, but the basic idea is the same. There are a few problems, though. Like, what would have happened if Captain Li Shang had looked down while he was holding Mulan by the collar? The movie would have been over fast. Kudos to the artist here for their solid animating skills.

18 Winnie The Pooh's Daily Ritual

Buzzfeed

Introducing a favorite GIF I can’t believe the editors of TheGamer let me use: Winnie the Pooh worshipping the divine beast! For all of you who thought Pooh bear was a harmless old teddy, buckle up. He’s an inanimate teddy bear that’s come to life. How else do you explain that without demonic possession? Yep, Winnie the Pooh owes his eternal life to the Lord of Darkness. Every morning he wakes up and dutifully worships him in the fashion shown here. The hundred-acre wood is actually the last foothold of the devil’s hold on earth. The lovely critters are luring in Christopher Robbin, the purest most untouched loser they could find, to sacrifice him to the Dark Lord.

17 That's Not What She Meant

Imgur

Oh no! The Younglings! Natalie Portman has a brand new commercial deal where she acts dramatic and asks, “What would you do for love?” Natalie’s answer is her paycheck. But some clever so-and-so made the connection between Padme asking the question, and how Annakin might respond. The answer is a Youngling purge. Whenever I recall Darth Vader’s redemption arc in The Return of the Jedi, this scene comes to mind. Like, no dude, you totally went on a Youngling purge. Being nice in the last ten seconds of your life doesn’t excuse that. But I have to say, as much as it’s fashionable to dump on the prequels, kudos to George Lucas for going through with such a dark plot point.

16 Smashing

Buzzfeed

There is a growing trend among the GIF community that I’m ok with… And that’s the trend of inappropriately splicing in Nigel Thornberry into beloved cinema classics. Why Nigel Thornberry? There’s just something about the aquiline, magnificently-mustached British explorer that saps all the romance instantly… or does it make it MORE romantic? Maybe the internet is trying to tell us something here. I, for one, know that if Disney remade Pocahontas with Nigel Thornberry in the title role, I would have to quit my job and end all my personal commitments because all I would ever do is rewatch the movie over and over again. Let’s make it happen, Disney. Other notable Thorberries include: inappropriate Twilight, inappropriately Spiderman, and inappropriate regular Wild Thornberries.

15 Ariel Flounders

Buzzfeed

It seems the world above the sea isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Here we have Ariel enjoying her newfound freedom in the only way she knows hows: breaking out into song and dance. Only this time, a GIF artist has made the scene a tad more realistic. As the waves crest behind Ariel, they break against her and throw her over the rocks. It breaks the Disney magic, but it’s probably how the scene would go down in real life. Since her dad controls the tides, you could say it’s his way of locking her in her room for good. Climbing up on rocks is the same thing as sneaking out of her window.

14 He's So Handsome

Imgur

Witness derpified Kocoum. This is by far my favorite among the derpy Disney GIFs circulating right now. It’s easy to slap a derpy face on any old character. Okay, maybe not that easy because I don’t know how to do it. But it’s much harder to derpify the perfect character. I think our anonymous GIF artist chose right. Kocoum is so stoic and no-nonsense. It’s extra funny with the women saying that he’s so handsome and that they love his smile. Once again, I WOULD PAY GOOD MONEY to see the entirety of Pocahontas with Derpified Kocoum. I think the intense scene where he’s holding the knife above John Smith would be greatly served by such an edit.

13 Play It Cool, It's Emma Watson

Imgur

This GIF is from The Bling Ring, a fact that you already know because everyone has seen all the Emma Watson movies. All of them. The Bling Ring was, of course, Emma’s first big not for kids break from her previous films. In this scene, she’s flirting with someone on the dance floor. The added GIF is a close approximation of how many dudes (and some ladies, mind) would react. I particularly like this one person’s post on Imgur that titles the GIF: when my crush flirts with me on the dancefloor. If you grew up at the same age as Emma Watson, as I did, then it was never weird. Okay, still super weird.

12 Derperella

Smosh

In addition to all the wonderfully messed-up GIFs of Disney films out there, may I present another current trend: the derpy princess. How does one define “derpy” exactly? One need only look at Cinderella’s googly eyes and lolling tongue to immediately recognize said derpiness yet its exact definition is elusive. The term actually comes from Matt Stone and Trey Parker from the earlier South Park days. They’ve essentially coined a new word because the concept “derp” is everywhere on the internet now. Fun fact: In a recent Nerdist podcast, Trey Parker tells a story about how his stepson assumed he was uncool and didn’t know the word “derp.” Trey Parker told him to google the word and it turned out he literally invented it.

11 Just Be Yourself

Buzzfeed

There’s a very popular movement among the GIF community to remake the Disney movies with sloths. Again, I have no idea why someone would reasonably spend their time and talents doing this, but I salute you. In this case, the fairy godmother turns Cinderella into a sloth. Why sloths? I guess the Disney princesses are always upheld as these unrealistic idealizations of femininity that it’s funny to see them as sloths instead. ALSO THEY’RE JUST THE CUTEST. I’d like to see the entirety of Cinderella with Prince Charming unable to tell that Cinderella is a sloth. It’s not like he would notice. For those unaware, Prince Charming suffers from Prosopagnosia, or facial blindness. If the shoe fit her, he’d probably marry her and go through with the honeymoon having no idea of her true slothly nature.

10 Titanic Wreck'd

Dorkly

Now, this was a shot demanding a combined GIF. The best-combined GIFs are those that when spliced together, really appear as if they’re the same film. Now, this isn’t perfect; the little girl’s background is clearly different than Leo’s Titanic backdrop. Still, the blurring effect distracts from that. It all blends together at a cursory glance. The final result is a sadistic and abusive Leo swinging around a child by the pig-tails. His malicious smile makes it all the more hilarious. Once again we see the Kuleshov Effect in action. In the original shot, he was in the throes of ecstasy. In the second, he’s not such a good guy. Where’s a grizzly bear to take out Leo when you need one?

9 How It Really Would've Gone

Imgur

When Batman v. Superman was first announced, many fans pointed to the disparity between their powers. I mean, Batman’s got sick moves and a utility belt and the power of wealth but he’s a regular mortal person. Superman is a Kryptonian with superhuman strength and laser eyes. So this GIF aptly demonstrates how a realistic showdown between the two would go. Right as they’re facing off as dramatically as possible, Superman would zap Bruce Wayne like a sociopathic kid wielding a magnifying glass on the ants in his back-yard. Although Superman would never kill. And if their moms have the same name? Well, then all bets are off. Too bad nobody stopped World War II the same way: “My mom’s name is Klara Hitler too!”

8 Ron Calls It

Smosh

Leave it to Ron Weasley to speak the truth. Say what you will about Harry’s bumbling ginger sidekick, he won the heart of Hermione. That’s a prize greater than any Elder Wand or House Cup. Ever since Twilight arrived on the scene, fans couldn’t help but compare the two franchises… and see the seismic gulf between quality. Apologies to Twilight fans, but it really needs to be said. And then if that weren’t bad enough, Twilight had to go and spawn an even worse incarnation, Fifty Shades of Grey. When J.K Rowling was asked in an interview how she felt about being dethroned by the record books sales of Fifty Shades of Grey, she famously quipped, “just think how many more books I could have sold if Harry had been a bit more creative with his wand.”

7 There And Still There Again

Imgur

Here’s another alternate ending GIF that we just can’t get enough of. We’re all familiar with the fable of The Hobbit. Gandalf shows up at The Shire and whisks Bilbo away on a wonderful CG-filled adventure. But what if Bilbo stuck closer to his hobbit roots, both literally and figuratively, and told Gandalf to get lost? Well, then we’d have the finish product you see here: a run-time of about two minutes. Perhaps critical reception would be warmer compared to The Hobbit trilogy as we know it now. In a way, if Bilbo never went on his quest and never took the ring from Gollum, there wouldn’t be any Dark Lord crisis to begin with. This very well may be the most ideal scenario.

6 JediBusters

Combined GIFs have become all the rage in recent time, where people with too much time on their hands edit together two disparate movies and create a whole new messed-up movie instead. You’ve no doubt seen some of the combined GIF art on this page already. Although a simple act of sticking two different pictures together, this GIF art is an example of the Kuleshov Effect, which makes cinema cinema. Wikipedia defines The Kuleshov Effect as, “a mental phenomenon by which viewers derive more meaning from the interaction of two sequential shots than from a single shot in isolation.” Boom. Cinema. You came here to get a laugh at Luke Skywalker getting lightning-tickled and instead you kinda learned something maybe.
