The Star Wars series is a juggernaut when it comes to franchises. It holds such draw strength that, even after more than forty years of its initial release, most of its movies rank as the year’s highest grossing film. In 2017, Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi was released and was lambasted by a large number of fans who pointed out a significant number of points that didn’t make sense.

This was in fact not the first time Star Wars was scrutinized for with these accusations, as almost two decades previously Episode I: The Phantom Menace arrived in cinemas much to majority of the fans’ chagrin. It didn’t stop there, though, as the follow ups, Episode II and Episode III, didn’t do much to change viewers’ opinions and now the prequel series is seen as the much maligned phase of the franchise that many love to take jabs at for fun.

Thus, it’s fair to presume there would be a whole lot memes to back up this disdain the fans have, and you’d be right there. The internet is filled with hilarious memes that seek to send George Lucas a message as to how he toyed with ardent fans’ emotions.

When jokes have some truth sprinkled in them they are always more funny to the beholder and these memes do tickle the funny bone as most of them are sure to be agreeable with your opinion over how the prequels don’t make sense.

Let’s have a look then, shall we?

25 Grammar Lesson

via pinterest.com

Anakin Skywalker is a walking contradiction in himself. The guy never makes any sense each time he opens his mouth, and his actions don’t speak of any diversity either. The prequel series is lettered with random quotations spewed out of the young Darth Vader’s mouth, many of the time acting in contrast with how he intended to act.

His ultimate fall from grace is when he attempts to choke the life out his spouse, even though he had been swayed by Palpatine in the hopes the Sith lord could prevent his wife from an early demise. So what is the point of the entire movie if Anakin himself is then using the force to end her? That’s just bonkers. This meme not only points to that flaw in logic but also shows no sympathies for Padmé, the same way Anakin doesn’t.

24 When Did He Say That?

via pinterest.com

Geroge Lucas was definitely making things ups along as he went in the original trilogy, as there are many inconsistencies widely present between the original and prequel trilogy, one of them has been attempted to be explained in a lazy manner but which has provided us with a funny meme to go along with it.

In Episode IV: A New Hope, Obi-Wan introduces Luke to the force and the ways of the Jedi. Upon presenting him with his father’s lightsaber, he claims he always wanted Luke to have it. But at what point did that come up, exactly? The only part the quote could be inserted in is their last conversation, and it is hilarious to imagine an incensed Anakin screaming a ludicrous statement such as that when he’s burning to a crisp.

23 Who Wants To Be A Sand Hater?

via mbird.com

You knew this was coming. There’s no way a list of Star Wars memes could be complete without including the dreaded "I don’t like sand" line. This line sealed Anakin’s laughable role in the prequel series and, even more than a decade later, is as hilarious as it was the first time you heard it.

Exactly how this stupid little kid turned into the ultimate cool villain Darth Vader is impossible to comprehend in the scene between Anakin and his future wife where they discuss each other’s likes and dislikes, with Anakin confessing he dislikes sand because it’s "coarse and gets everywhere." We don’t know whether it’s the absurd line itself or the actor’s terrible delivery of it, but the fact of the matter is nothing could have made us take the character seriously after this. There’s also the question as to why anyone would even bring a nonsensical topic such as this during a romantic conversation anyway!

22 The Un-favorite

via pinterest.com

Who among us doesn’t sigh in exasperation every time the ignominious arrival of Jar Jar Binks on our screen takes place? Star Wars is filled with kooky characters that are inserted purely for comedic purposes. C3PO, and maybe even Chewbacca, take the spots of lovable sidekicks whose eccentricities amuse us, and Jar Jar Binks was introduced to fill in this very spot.

However, the character is all that’s wrong with the overload of CGI in the Star Wars prequel trilogy. It’s so very uncomfortable to look at this creature without being repulsed by it only for Jar Jar to open his mouth and make us want to fling him off to another galaxy far far away.

Yousa ruined the franchise, Jar Jar, Yousa really did ruin it.

21 Coming Out On Top

via reddit.com

Tom Hardy’s portrayal of Bane in The Dark Knight Rises was magnificent as he was able to convey the intimidating and dark aspects of the character appropriately. But as the internet is filled with trolls, those intimidating words have been given new life in the form of memes and this is applied to perfection here.

Obi-Wan is the master of high grounds, whether he himself is at the higher ground or on the opposite end, there’s no beating this guy at this game. Let’s be real though, the whole High ground logic is absurd to say the least. It doesn’t make sense as to why standing a little above would give a big advantage to anyone, and here Obi-Wan inadvertently demonstrates just that by finishing off Darth Maul. But that doesn’t mean he can escape being part of this meme. The high ground isn’t that powerful.

20 Throw Him Out, He Makes Too Much Sense

via Imgflip.com

Of course you could argue they had backed themselves in a corner as the canon of the original trilogy needed to be in place. Oh wait, that’s not what happened at all. A lot of liberties were taken where the prequels were concerned. The best way to cover up the inconsistencies in the prequels was just probably just how the above meme depicted; let’s just forget what we know so far and expect everyone to eat up what we show them up now.

In the original trilogy, Obi-Wan guides Luke over to Master Yoda as he was supposed to be the Jedi master that had trained Obi-Wan himself. And yet Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace came along with Qui-Gon Jinn as Obi-Wan’s true master and here we were with a totally new canon to process.

19 Those Meddling Jedi

via notey.com

Kids watching the Star Wars prequels for the first time might have felt there was a vague resemblance about Emperor Palpatine. That’s probably because the Emperor looks just like one of those Scooby-Doo villains who are unmasked by the end of the episode.

This meme proves a fair point at the outlandish outcome of the prequel trilogy where a couple of weirdos, Anakin and Palpatine, take down the entire republic which had consisted of thousands of Jedi. Of course the idea was to present a couple of antagonists who had the ability and power to do just that but we can never take these guys seriously based on how they act like a creepy old man and an edgy teen. It honestly would’ve been more appropriate for Palpatine to exclaim "I would’ve gotten away with it too if it hadn’t been for you meddling Jedi." Now all we need is a talking dog and we’re all set.

18 Forever Young

via thegamer.com

Time jumps almost never make sense as far as character appearances are concerned. Therefore, unless the studio wanted to shoot in the same vein as Boyhood, over a literal ten year period, there wasn’t much chance the characters would have looked much different from Episode I to Episode II. Anakin’s actor was replaced entirely, so we have justification there for his change in appearance. But what justification is there for Padmé looking exactly the same?

You’d think a movie like Star Wars, which cost over $100 million to make, could have invested in a little more money to the makeup department and have Natalie Portman look slightly older. But it’s up to us to dial down our intelligence and believe Padmé to retain the same features after a whole decade.

17 Just Do It!

via the-heroes-universe.com

All that effort for nothing. Stupid Anakin wasted the entire time Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi put in to ensure this kid turned out to be the one to bring balance to the force. All three movies in the prequel trilogy depict Anakin’s fall into the dark side of the force but there’s a lot the light side had to offer him so it can’t be said there was no effort from the good guys. Blame the shoddy plot more than anything else as ultimately it all came down to Shia Laboeuf’s favorite two words to sway Anakin’s thoughts.

What makes this all the more laughable is the funny manner with which Palpatine utters "Do It" to Anakin so as to make him finish off Count Dooku. Maybe there was something strangely hypnotizing about it that made him kick all morals down the gutter.

16 Obi, You Troll

via facebook.com

It’s one thing to talk in metaphors to make a point come across, and another to make it so that the other person takes it in a literal sense. When Obi-Wan reveals to a young Luke Skywalker of his father’s origins, he makes it sound like Darth Vader executed the young man’s father.

If the old man was content with disclosing this much about the younger Vader, he probably should have just told Luke the whole story and spared the poor boy of the eye popping reveal in The Empire Strikes Back. Of course the old Jedi master wasn’t entirely wrong as when Darth Vader was birthed, Anakin Skywalker was no more, but let’s not forget he trolled Luke pretty hard here for a rather nonsensical reason.

15 Yup, That's Basically It

via me.me

Darth Vader is one cool villain. You can’t find anyone who has even sniffed around popular culture in the last forty years and hasn’t heard of the character or glimpsed him in passing at least. And people generally accept Darth Vader to be one of the coolest characters out there.

However, the prequels did a bang-up job in masking any semblance of Darth Vader in Anakin Skywalker, as you’d be hard pressed to find any of the dark and calculating Sith master in this reckless young boy. For the most part, this meme of Obi-Wan yelling "No, Anakin" really does sum up the prequels well. Basically the story goes from one part to another with Anakin messing up in one place and then screwing up even worse later on. Obi Wan had his hands full all right.

14 Didn't See That Coming

via me.me

Most of those who didn’t rally the streets rioting after watching Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace had to be those too young to remember the original trilogy releases. So odds are you were born in the mid eighties or early nineties if you liked the prequel trilogy films upon release, as it was your first Star Wars outing and you ate up whatever came your way.

Now that we’ve all grown up, though, it’s highly unlikely you don’t slap your face in exasperation at your younger self’s naïveté since you’ve seen the original trilogy. It highlights very well how CGI is not really necessary, as a good story should always be given precedent over shoddy graphics that do little to advance the plot or make sense.

13 I Hear The King's Looking To Adopt

via pinterest.com

Here’s one of those things that people consider to be plucked right out of a fairy tale. Luke and Leia are separated at birth after the passing of their mother. Leia is eventually raised as a princess while poor young Luke is sent far away to live as a farm boy.

The fairy tale aspect comes in to play with the ridiculousness at how easy it was to find a royal family for Leia to go to. You only find these kinds of Monarch adoptions of orphaned children in children's stories. Also, if they could find a royal family for Leia, then why not for Luke as well? Considering how easily he got over his uncle and aunt’s demise in A New Hope, it doesn’t seem like he was very close to them in any case.

12 No More Excuses

via pinterest.com

We generally give Obi-Wan a pass for his inability to sense the evil residing within Anakin Skywalker. The movies would have you believe that Obi-Wan always saw the conflict within Anakin between the light and dark side of the force, and chose to believe Anakin would bring balance to it.

But this is all rather lame, considering Anakin hardly ever did much to have Obi-Wan assume he wasn’t evil. The prequels have on the whole depicted Anakin as a punk filled with angst who was easily lured into the dark side rather than be someone who was manipulated into becoming evil. Therefore, this meme does have a point in showing that Obi-Wan was probably just making excuses and saw some of that Sith dark side in the young Skywalker.

11 Everybody Hates Padmé

via memecenter.com.com

At times the prequel trilogy wanted to stick so badly to the canon established in the original that they left all logic out of the situation. Yes, we know Padmé was not meant to survive these films, as she was not present in the later ones. But they could have written her out in a better way.

In a galaxy where there’s a weapon capable of destroying whole planets, you would think there would be some kind of technology that prevents women from passing away during childbirth. Oh that’s right, there is similar technology when at the same time Anakin Skywalker was being treated for severe third degree burns and injuries that should have taken his life. But he came out fine and dandy while his wife was left to her own devices because 'her time had come.'

10 Daddy Issues

via pinterest.com

The classic way of introducing the hero to a story is by making said character out to be an orphan. Pretty much all mainstream media franchises make use of this tried and tested trope, and it’s not bad either seeing as this instantly gives the main characters a layer to uncover. However, Star Wars has this in droves as not only do all the main characters have no clue who their father is, you can’t help but realize that all the Stormtroopers probably don’t know where they came from either.

These poor soldiers are left with no identity for the most part and are gunned down mercilessly with no second thought. Now that it has been pointed out, shame on you for enjoying their demise and shame on our heroes for taking these sad souls out before they got a chance to meet their real fathers.

9 Really Make Sense, This Doesn't

via craveonline.com

George Lucas is at times a meticulous planner and at times is just pulling things out of thin air. In many plot points during the prequel trilogy, the story is unfolded with a lot of inconsistencies present as Lucas had not outlined the exact end to the movies while they were being filmed. He probably also did not consider the idea that he could have simply released the Star Wars films in the right order and have The Phantom Menace made back in the seventies instead of A New Hope.

This meme amusingly points this out and it fits in so well with Yoda’s speech pattern that you end up questioning why George Lucas really didn’t make the films in the right order.

8 A Troll Of Epic Proportions

via thegamer.com

This doesn’t have much to do with plot logic at first glance but if you read between the lines you can spot what this meme is trying to point out. Anakin was more or less a confused kid in the whole prequel series, easily swayed by his emotions which varied between boyishly ecstatic to hooliganism depending on how he felt that day.

Here he is trolled by a "Who’s that Pokémon?" question only for it to be revealed as his wife’s grave. The point to note is how in the last frame he has transitioned into Darth Vader, which shows how easily this younger version of him was fooled. It also highlights how hilarious it is to see this guy freaking out about one thing or the other. So we’re sorry, Anakin, but you make it really hard for us not to laugh at you.

7 Make Up Your Mind, Obi

via pinterest.com

You get the sense that Obi-Wan was a laid back dude who got caught up in all the struggle with the empire and the resistance. He was also content enough in lounging around the desert in the events between Episode III and Episode IV. So he probably was being honest in the above scene where he claimed he wasn’t brave enough for politics as easy going people rarely have any interest in harsh debates and struggles for power.

And yet in the climax of Episode III, Kenobi confronts Anakin, who is lording over his new ‘Empire’, in distraught fashion at the future Darth Vader’s intention to be something of an Emperor, claiming his allegiance is "To the Republic. To Democracy!" Someone mind pointing out to dear old Obi-Wan that Democracy actually involves politics? Maybe he might have come around to the idea of an Empire otherwise.

6 Sprightly For An Old Guy

via reddit.com

Emperor Palpatine is truly the highest level of Sith you could find. The guy does it all, as far as plotting and scheming are concerned. He takes it up a notch when in combat he was seen putting up an equal fight with the likes of Yoda and took out Mace Windu as well. Palpatine is especially adept at concealing his true intentions and ability, something Windu probably came to regret taking lightly.

This meme points to Windu’s fallacy when, in their duel, the old guy is surprisingly sprightly and does all kinds of acrobatics to boot. It’s cool and all, but Palpatine is still an old guy, so where does all this agility come from exactly? It's weird, considering that at some points when he’s not even trying to fool anyone Palpatine can barely walk straight without limping.
