Bonjour et bienvenue, as Overwatch’s French, spider-themed sniper would say. One of the four snipers present in the game, Widowmaker has been a popular character from the beginning. Whether she’s being played by the pros in Overwatch League, or helping you win your latest round of competitive, Widowmaker is a good, solid pick if you know how to play her.

But even if you don’t play Widowmaker, she’s garnered quite a reputation among the community. Through clips of amazing and impossible shots, unique skins that have artists flock to draw, and even the way people play her in the game itself, Widowmaker has spawned her own little culture among Overwatch fans – and where there’s culture, there’s memes. Lots and lots of memes. Take a look at a few of them. C’est très amusant.

10 Not Today, Pharah

There’s nothing more satisfying than shooting an ulting Pharah out of the sky with a well-timed click. Sniping anyone mid-ult is one of the best feelings that playing Widowmaker can provide, and if you get a nice clean shot, it might even be Play of the Game worthy. Single-shot kills are always the best kinds to turn to your friends and brag about, too, as you marvel at your own skills when another ult voice line gets cut short. Sweet, sweet victory.

Just don’t celebrate too hard, or you’ll miss the rest of your victim’s team frantically spraying bullets to find you.

9 Different Kind of Sniper

Widowmaker’s in-lore rivalry with Ana extends into the game’s meta, as the decision between “healing sniper” and “regular sniper” looms over you. The game warns that your team already has a sniper, but you also have a healer. You could get away with playing Widow, but do you really want to be that guy? You pick her anyway – because why not, right? – and suddenly you’re the bad guy. Suddenly, being a sniper is “bad,” and “killing your teammates is wrong.”

Sadly, the actual game doesn’t let you snipe your own teammates. Even if you really, really want to.

8 Or, Play Whatever You Want

The most important thing to remember about Overwatch is that it’s a game, and games are meant to be fun. Play what’s fun for you – no matter what anyone else might be telling you, or what the meta says is the best to play, or even if you’re not good at Widow. Goofing off on a hero you barely play for fun can make any match twice as fun, and you might even get an accidentally cool headshot out of it! Clip it, share it, pretend you’re a Widow God. No one can judge you.

7 Even If You’re Bad

It does suck to be bad at a hero as cool as Widowmaker, though. Not to mention that if you can’t hit anything, you’re wasting both your time and your team’s. You start to feel bad for your character, at that point, for thinking yourself worthy of controlling them. But you push on anyway, because Widow is cool, and it’s just a game. It’s not that big a deal.

And then you miss the easiest shot on a Mercy standing completely still, and you fall off your perch when you try to jump to a new vantage point, and then you miss the grapple…

6 Like, Really Bad

Allegedly, Widowmaker is engineered to be the perfect sniper. She feels nothing for her victims, her heart is slowed so she never misses a shot, her aim is as cold and calculating as if she were a weapon of mass destruction herself. Nothing deters her, nothing stops her, nothing can defeat her.

In reality, you are not Widowmaker. You are a regular person with a mouse and keyboard trying your darndest to hit that McCree in the backline, you really are. This game is hard. Maybe you should switch heroes.

5 Spider’s Bane

Every sniper’s weakness: the crouch spam. Looking down a scope to see a character frantically breakdancing in an attempt to miss your shots is always the worst, because a lot of the time, it works. And for a character like Widow, who’s kit revolves very heavily around clean headshots, that frenzied bobbing up and down can make it very difficult – if not impossible – to get any real work done. If you wait for them to stop moving, you’ll have missed about fifty other opportunities to score picks. If you stop trying, you’re letting them win. And that is unforgivable.

4 Oh Là Là, Mon Chérie

It’s especially gratifying to see an enemy Widowmaker mess up, especially if you can kill them right after. You establish your dominance as the Ultimate Widow of the game. No one can challenge your might. Child’s play, this game. You could win it in your sleep.

It’s less fun when you happen to be the Widow messing up, but switching off would be showing weakness. The best thing to do in this situation is redouble your efforts to prove that you’re worthy of the hypothetical Widowmaker crown. And hope the enemy Widow messes up so you can mock them instead.

3 Don’t Forget To Play The Objective

Of course, not all Widowmaker memes are made by Widow players, and there are plenty (like this one) that express a supreme dislike for said players. In particular, those players that refuse to touch the point for any reason.

Sure, the objective is scary. Getting picks from half a mile away and several stories is a lot safer than playing on the ground as squishy sniper. But at the end of the game, when the difference between winning and losing is a single body on the point, just die there. Just throw your purple body on the point and die, because it’s better than getting a cool headshot right as the LOSER screen flashes up.

2 Please Just Touch the Payload

In a similar vein, the creators of these memes want to implore Widow players not to be afraid of the payload. It’s not going to hurt you, they promise. If it’s overtime, just fling yourself onto that floating car, that scrap metal, whatever. Throw out that grapple and yoink yourself directly into enemy fire. Take one for the team. You’ll have more chances to get sick headshots and earn that POTG if the game lasts longer. And the way to make the game last longer is to touch that payload! Come on, you can do it!

1 You’ll Hit Something Eventually

As unforgiving as playing Widowmaker is, every kill you do get feels awesome. It’s like some kind of sniper-specific energy activates every time you click someone’s head and they disappear with a satisfying dink! Even if it only happens once every ten minutes, you keep coming back for more, because man wouldn’t it be cool if I hit this shot?

Take your time, though. Don’t go wildly clicking around and giving away your position. Be like Widowmaker. Slow your heart, still your breathing. Watch for the perfect moment to kill, like a spider watching its prey crawl right into its web.

Metaphorically of course.
