Ever since games like Nioh and Sekiro, the Soulslike genre has been experimenting with different time periods, from feudal Japan to ancient China to the French Revolution and more. But like other video game genres, it has yet to expand to other significant periods of history, even when there's a plethora they could pull from.

Of course, these potential games would not be 100 percent historically accurate, as no Soulslike game is, but would be heavily inspired by significant historical events of the era they're set in, providing a somewhat alternate version of each of these eras in time.

10 Prehistoric Age

In the past, video games typically represented the prehistoric age in a somewhat cartoony manner, but over the last decade or so, games like Far Cry Primal have represented it in a more realistic way, and it could provide a very interesting setting for a Soulslike game.

Past Souls games like Sekiro have had large animals based on real-life ones as bosses, so having various prehistoric animals featured as bosses would be a step above that. Imagine having to fight creatures like Wooly Mammoths, Saber-Toothed Tigers, and Megatheriums with nothing but a spear, a rock, fire, and your dodge-rolling abilities.

9 Ancient Egypt

Ancient Egypt is a setting used relatively often in video games, such as Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy and Assassin's Creed Origins. Still, it somewhat surprisingly has not yet been used as a setting for a Soulslike game.

Due to all the various creatures and fascinating deities featured throughout ancient Egyptian mythology, it would provide an excellent setting for a Soulslike game. You could test your mettle against bosses based on Egyptian mythological beings like the dead-devouring chimera Ammut, the giant snake Apep, the mysterious Serpopard, the hieracosphinx, and maybe even the god of war, violence, and chaos himself, Set.

8 Pre-Colonial Pacific Islands

The various islands within the Pacific Ocean are rarely used as settings outside a few indie games like Call of the Sea, and even less often do we see the pasts of these islands or get to explore their cultures and mythologies.

The Pacific Islands include the islands of Western and Eastern Melanesia, Micronesia, Central, Western, Eastern Polynesia, and Nothern Polynesia, including Hawaii, and several islands of the Eastern Pacific, so there should be plenty of history and mythology to pull from as long as developers diligently research. A Soulslike featuring sailing between islands could be the next big thing for the genre.

7 Pre-Colonial Mexico/Central America

Pre-colonial Mexico and Central America have been used as a setting in a few indie games, such as Mulaka and Aztech Forgotten Gods, but there seem to be no Soulslike games based on them yet. As they're home to many ancient and indigenous cultures, a Soulslike game set before or during European colonies' arrival could help preserve the history and mythology of these less explored cultures.

For ancient cultures, there are the Aztecs, Incans, Mayans, and other various Mesoamerican cultures. There are also over 60 indigenous cultures still active today in Mexico alone, with many others inhabiting various countries in Central America, so a Soulslike game based on their respective histories could provide additional educational value.

6 American Revolution

The American Revolution is a setting typically used for educational and strategic historical games, except for Assassin's Creed 3. A Soulslike game based on this period in history could either feature Americans protecting themselves from the British or Natives protecting themselves from all matter of European colonizers.

A game like this could also lean into the mythologies of various Native American tribes, specifically those from the east coast of the United States, with all kinds of creatures serving as bosses to test you and becoming allies after they have been defeated. It's a shame this setting is so underutilized outside specific genres.

5 The Golden Age Of Piracy

While many games are based on pirates, they don't always have a historical context, being based more on the idea of pirates, except for games like Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag and Freedom Cry.

A Soulslike game based on the Golden Age of Piracy would primarily be set in the Caribbean Sea and its various islands. While it could feature some famous historical pirates as characters, it could also feature mythical creatures like Krakens, Mermaids, and Sirens. Like Black Flag, it could also feature some sailing between the islands of the Caribbean — of course, probably in a more limited fashion.

4 World War 1 Europe

Although the First World War has been a setting in more recent games like Battlefield 1, it isn't used nearly as often as the second World War is. Because this war, formerly known as The Great War, has not been explored as often, it may be an excellent setting for a Soulslike game.

While it may be odd to have more modern weapons in a soulslike game, Remnant From The Ashes already broke the ice with that concept, so having guns wouldn't be something new to the genre. However, having access to vehicles like battleships and airplanes, in addition to the weapons of the time, would be.

3 The Wild West

Plenty of games have used a setting based on the Wild West era of North America, with the most well-known being the Red Dead series, but recent games based on the era, such as West of Dead and Evil West, have included more supernatural elements, which is why now may be the perfect time for a Soulslike game set in the Wild West.

A Soulslike game based on the Wild West could feature enemies and bosses based on various real-life animals and cryptids from the western half of North America, mythological creatures from Native American tribes, and famous outlaws like Billy the Kid.

2 The Partition Of India

Many individuals did not learn about the Partition of India until it was featured in the first season of the Ms. Marvel television series. Many people from India migrated to the newly independent country of Pakistan and vice versa, with many Muslims and Hindus seeking religious freedoms from the religious majorities of each country.

Since this unfortunate and violent historical event has been so rarely explored in video games, a Soulslike game could provide a great way to educate those playing about the historical significance, and different aspects of the cultures represented, as long as those developing the game are familiar with the subject and treat it with proper care.

1 Early Heisei Era Japan

The first decade of the Heisei era, from 1989 through 1999, may seem like an odd historical setting for a Soulslike due to how modern it would be compared to others, but you have to remember that the 90s started over three decades ago, and many things have changed since then, even if it doesn't always seem like it.

Chainsaw Man, Tatsuki Fujimoto's popular manga and anime series, is even set in an alternate version of 1990s Japan, and features creatures known as devils who come back to life on Earth after they die in hell and vice versa. So, there's already something a Soulslike game set in the same era could be inspired by.
