Hitman 2 will bring a new competitive multiplayer game mode where players try to out-assassinate each other.
In most online multiplayer games involving wanton murder, the easiest way to get players to compete is to simply put them on opposing sides and then unleash them in a frenzy of blood and bullets. Games like Fortnite and PUBG are prime modern examples, but you can find any number of others throughout the ages.
Hitman is a little different. In a game where wholesale destruction is generally frowned upon, and when both players are supposed to be precision weapons, it doesn’t make a whole of sense to have them try to kill each other. The game would just become like every other online multiplayer shooter out there.
Leave it to IO Interactive to find creative ways to pit two deadly assassins against one another in a way that doesn’t involve murdering the other player.
In Hitman 2, you’ll be able to play against a friend (or random acquaintance) in a new competitive, one-on-one game mode called Ghost Mode. The rules of Ghost Mode are simple: first one to assassinate five targets wins.
Both players start in the same location and spawn as Agent 47 completely naked. You’ll have to grab whatever supplies you can find along the way. There will be random “Ghost Crates” that will have some juicy gear for you to use in your carefully planned takedown, but other than that it’s a “procure on sight” sort of game.
If you’re thinking it would be easy to disrupt your opponent’s carefully laid plans, then let us put that to bed right now. Both players exist in their own separate realities without any way to interact with the other. You’ll be able to see a ghostly, white(r) version of Agent 47 as your opponent, but nothing you say or do can affect your opponent or their environment.
Once you get a kill, the other player will have 20 seconds to respond or else you will get a point. However, you can’t just run in with guns blazing--only stealthy kills count. If someone sees you engage in homicide you don’t get the point.
Only the Miami location will be available at launch, but IO Interactive says they’ll add more locations soon after Hitman 2 hits stores. Which will be November 13th, so mark your calendars.
