GOG had been receiving a lot of criticism from users after the addition of Hitman - Game of the Year Edition. One of the primary reasons for the platform's popularity is that it sells DRM free games, meaning that they don't require a constant internet connection to play. However, Hitman's progression system and unlocks did require an online connection, causing unrest among customers who had purchased the game hoping to play offline. In a recent update, GOG has said that the listing for Hitman GOTY has been removed.

"We're still in dialogue with IO Interactive about this release," said the forum post by GOG. "Today we have removed HITMAN GOTY from GOG’s catalog – we shouldn’t have released it in its current form, as you’ve pointed out. We’d like to apologise for the confusion and anger generated by this situation. We’ve let you down and we’d like to thank you for bringing this topic to us – while it was honest to the bone, it shows how passionate you are towards GOG."

DRM free games are particularly useful for those who have poor internet connectivity, or prefer to play completely offline. Adding a game that requires an internet connection is one thing, but GOG listed Hitman GOTY along with ‘DRM free’ messaging on the game's page at the time. This understandably upset a number of people as they were straight up lied to.

“This game has online DRM. You can play though [sic] the game with the basic options, but many features, such as unlocking weapons, items, outfits, starting locations and more are locked behind an online requirement. The GOG page does not made [sic] this clear and is extremely misleading,” said one user in their review for the game.

As of two weeks ago, the critically acclaimed game had a 1.4/5 rating on the platform as customers were reviewbombing it. At the time, GOG wasn't quite as understanding as it was while issuing the apology. “In case you have purchased HITMAN and are not satisfied with the released version, you can use your right to refund the game," said a statement on September 24. "At the same time, while we’re open for meritful discussion and feedback, we will not tolerate review bombing and will be removing posts that do not follow our review guidelines.”
