The little village in Hokko Life may seem small, but there are other areas to unlock as you progress throughout the game. You can unlock the mines, a forest area, a pond, and more. The forest grows Mahogany trees, which give you Red Wood needed to craft and build things. The forest is the only place you can get these trees, but you must remember to replant them.

The mines, on the other hand, are where you get other types of ore and metal. Early on, you'll find yourself needing iron and steel to craft light bulbs. You'll have to wait until you can unlock the mines to do this. There are only a few steps you need to take to be able to get to the mines.

Updated October 5, 2022 by Sharnelle Earle: Hokko Life is now out of early access - that means heaps of upgrades to gameplay, narrative design, and more. Lots of mechanics and gameplay choices have been altered to better suit the quality of life of the player. We have updated this article to reflect the recent changes and what is now required for moving villager's houses for the current version 1.0.06.

Build Stairs To Second Level

During early access, there were some hoops to jump through to be able to unlock a bomb recipe needed to get into the mines. Now that Hokko Life has fully launched, some things have changed. You need only access the second level of the meadows and make your way to the mines, where you'll find a Broken Pickaxe.

The second level of the meadows is just the upper layer of grass that you can't get to at the start of the game. By visiting Sally, you should see a pre-built design for stairs needing 15 wooden planks. Place them on that meadow edge to reach the back layer of the meadow.

From here, you will now have access to a whole other area. At the very back center of the village, there is a cobblestone path. The cobblestone path will lead you onto a mountain trail with various different trails. You'll want to keep walking up until you find stairs to your left.

Repair The Broken Pickaxe

Once you reach the entrance to the mines, you'll find that it is blocked by big boulders. There is also a Broken Pickaxe on the ground. When you pick the pickaxe up, a quest will prompt, suggesting you take the pickaxe to Sally. Do note that there is a grassy area to the left of the mine entrance where grass and wood logs can be collected, and a house can be placed.

Take the pickaxe back to Sally in the village, and she will repair it for you. You will now be able to break the big rocky boulders around the village and anywhere else you may find them. Most importantly, though, you will be able to break the boulders blocking the mine entrance.

Explore The Mines And Talk To Sally

You can start exploring the mines. There will be regular boulders all throughout the cave. At the end of the cave, you will find a boulder with orange veins. This boulder yields copper ore. You are able to break it with the current pickaxe you have. If you try to explore any further, you will be stopped because it is too dark. Once you've seen how dark it is you can talk to Sally again. After exiting the mines for the first time, Sally will spawn at the entrance and speak with you.

You automatically go back to her workshop together, and she shares a Mining Lantern recipe with you. This lantern will help you explore the rest of the depths within the mines, along with the many ores and artifacts you have yet to find. The recipe costs three pieces of coal, two stones, and two wooden logs. It must be crafted at the crafting bench to the right of the workshop rather than at the design table.

Coal and stone are both found from breaking boulders.

Crafting Lamps And Breaking Rocks

Once you gain access to the mines, you'll have tons of rocks to mine. Here, rocks will respawn daily, so you'll always have access to stone and coal. Any rocks outside of the mines, like in the forest or in town, will not spawn back once destroyed.

Each branch into the mines will be blocked by a higher-tier rock. Near the end of the first part of the mines will be copper rocks. You can break these with the pickaxe you already have. Copper allows you to craft a copper axe. You need a copper axe to break down the mahogany trees in the forest and to progress deeper into the mines. For each mining level blocked, you will need to craft a higher-tier pickaxe.

  • If you have copper or stone loot stuck at the edge of the map, where you go to travel to the next area, there is a solution. Bring a furniture item to the mines and go to the location of the dropped loot. When placing furniture, you can't travel into another map location. This allows you to walk all the way to the edge of the screen without leaving the area.
