Roughly one week after Sony's big PS5 gameplay reveal event and we're still learning new details about the games shown. In a new developer documentary video posted today, Guerrilla Games confirmed that Horizon Forbidden West will not be launching with the PS5 this holiday, but instead sometime in 2021. That's a detail I would have included during Sony's event, but what do I know?

That news is a bit of bummer, but the rest of the details paint us a clearer picture of what Guerrilla hopes to achieve. The biggest improvement over its predecessor is that Forbidden West features "virtually no loading screens." Sounds like that PS5 SSD tech is getting pushed to the limit here. I'm all for eliminating the strange breaks in the action that games sometimes have.

We even get some early details of the plot that Forbidden West will have. The setting for this sequel will take place in a "new frontier" that stretches from Utah to the Pacific Ocean. The game's director, Mathijs de Jonge, states that the map won't be that much larger than Zero Dawn, though the PS5's upgraded tech will obviously help reduce loading times for new areas.

The story will focus on a hostile tribe that is somehow able to control the mechanical beasts in this world. A new blight is collapsing the biosphere of the west and it's up to Aloy to figure out how to stop the spread of this disease. It seems you'll be able to partner up with other tribes to accomplish this goal.

That sounds far more interesting than the original game. It also looks to take full advantage of the new technology that the PS5 brings to the table. I'm a little over big-budget games like this, but even I can't deny how jaw-dropping the visuals are.

If you were planning on grabbing a PS5 to play Horizon Forbidden West this holiday, though, you'll have to change your plans. I appreciate that Guerrilla is being given more time to make this the best possible game it can be, but it would be wise for Sony to be clearer with its marketing.
