Horizon Forbidden West launched last week, marking PlayStation's first big offering of 2022 and further heaping stress on those trying to play everything February has to offer. Especially after Guerilla jumped on the Dying Light 2 train and revealed Forbidden West has hundreds of hours of entertainment to offer up. Whether you spend that long in the game or not, most of the initial reactions to Aloy's newest adventure suggest you'll have a good time doing it.

However, as is often the case with a new title, Forbidden West has been subject to a little review bombing. Nothing that has dragged its Metacritic score down too far, but still not ideal. The PS5 version of the Horizon sequel currently has 818 negative reviews. If you're still on the fence about picking up a copy, it's worth drilling down into what some of those people giving zeros and ones out of ten have to say.

Some are criticizing the gameplay. A fair critique perhaps, as whether you enjoy how a game plays can be very much subjective. However, other reviews pick on Forbidden West's graphics, which seems nit-picky at best. The general consensus is that Forbidden West's visuals are pretty stunning, even on the PS4 version of the game which has also been subjected to a flood of negative and somewhat unfair reviews.

The kicker is the reviews that focus on Aloy's appearance and Forbidden West's apparent woke ideology and want to be politically correct. One player refers to Aloy as a “bearded woman”, citing that as reason enough to skip the game and play Elden Ring instead. To clarify, Aloy does not have a beard, although why her having one would be reason enough not to play a game is unclear. The player is one of a vocal few who has taken issue with Forbidden West being so detailed that you can see Aloy's facial hair if you zoom in really close. Something almost every human on the planet has by the way, regardless of gender.

If near-perfect graphics and a female lead looking too much like a real woman aren't for you, then hey, maybe you should give Forbidden West a miss. Even if you do take issue with that sort of thing, scoring a game 0/10 for those reasons seems a little harsh. Just another timely reminder, whether it be when buying a game or otherwise, to give some of the user reviews a read rather than just looking at the numbers when making your decision.
