Rocket League developer Psyonix has teamed up with toy company Mattel to release a new toy set based on the popular video game.

According to IGN, the partnership will release a brand-new Hot Wheels play set that will bring the Battle-Cars to life. The play set, named Hot Wheels Rocket League RC Rivals Set, will include two remote-controlled Battle-Cars, a Rocket League ball, and a play mat/arena that resembles the playing field from the actual game - including a charging base for the ball and Battle-Cars in the same locations as where the energy boost power-ups are located in the game. Players will control their Battle-Cars via Bluetooth from a smartphone or tablet; a medium which has seen success through other remote-controlled devices, such as drones.

Additionally, the set will be accompanied by codes that can be used for redeeming special in-game items. More specifics surrounding the codes and in-game items will be announced closer to the release of the play set, which is tentatively scheduled for the 2018 holiday season, with a release price of USD $179.99.

If all goes according to plan, the Hot Wheels play set will be the third physical toy set associated with Rocket League. Psyonix teamed up with toy company Zag Toys, who first released a twelve-Battle-Car lineup of pull-back racers in June of last year, with a handful of rare Battle-Cars coming with codes for redeeming special in-game items. Zag Toys will be releasing a second set of Rocket League-inspired toys this March. Light-Up Battle-Car Clip-Ons will be available, along with - you guessed it - certain rare models that will come with a redeemable code for obtaining special in-game items.

While the success of the popular video game is undeniable, 2018 should be a banner year for Psyonix. The game is already available on all major consoles, having joined the Nintendo Switch family late last year, and Xbox One X support planned for late 2018. Today, it was announced that the beta for the game’s new “Tournaments” mode - which will allow players to compete against other players in bracketed-single elimination tournaments - will be live on Steam for all interested players starting Wednesday, February 21, and ending on Friday, February 23. The mode is scheduled to be released on all platforms with the game’s Spring 2018 update.

We will have to wait until the holiday season to see how well the physical play set does for the partnership, but there is reason to believe that the set will do well, especially considering the success of the Hot Wheels DLC already available in the game itself (with a new round of Hot Wheels DLC coming later this year). Hot Wheels will be showcasing the play set in New York City at Toy Fair 2018 this weekend.
