Minecraft's Nether had been neglected for many years. Most areas looked the same, and players usually had little reason to visit it more than a handful of times. This all changed with version 1.16, otherwise known as the Nether Update. Amongst the changes this update brought was a new mob, the piglin. Bartering with them can be a beneficial way to earn some rare items, if you're lucky enough.

It certainly took a while for piglins to be added to Minecraft. Zombie pigmen (now zombie piglins) have been in the game for a long time now, hinting at the existence of regular Pigmen as well. Now, we finally have non-undead pig people, and they're not hard to find.

Piglins can be found in the Nether, hanging around the standard Nether wastes biome, crimson forests, and the various bastion remnants scattered throughout this dimension. To make sure they don't attack you, make sure to wear at least one piece of gold armour. Try to avoid the gold axe wielding piglin brutes, as they'll attack you no matter what you're wearing.

Bartering with piglins is a simple process. Simply use a gold ingot on them (or throw it nearby) and they'll take it. After a few seconds have passed, the piglin will throw an item back. Here's a list of what you can get from bartering, along with their drop chances:

  • 1 Enchanted Book with Soul Speed has around a 1.18% drop chance.
  • 1 Iron Boots with Soul Speed has around a 1.89% drop chance.

These items have around a 2.36% chance to drop:

  • 9-36 Iron Nuggets
  • 1 Splash Potion of Fire Resistance
  • 1 Potion of Fire Resistance

These items have around a 4.73% chance to drop:

  • 8-16 Nether Quartz
  • 5-12 Glowstone Dust
  • 2-6 Magma Cream
  • 4-8 Ender Pearls
  • 8-24 String

These final items have around a 9.46% chance to drop:

  • 1-5 Fire Charges
  • 8-16 Gravel
  • 4-10 Leather
  • 4-16 Nether Bricks
  • 1 Obsidian
  • 1-3 Crying Obsidian
  • 4-16 Soul Sand

A mixed bag overall, but there are some good potential trades. Equipment with Soul Speed will make traversing the Nether much easier, and crying obsidian can be used to craft the new respawn anchors. Either way, this is a decent way use up any spare gold you have, especially if you don't feel like exploring for rarer items.

Like most newly introduced features in Minecraft, bartering is going to be changed at some point soon. The next update will adjust the drop table for bartering, and there will probably be more changes in the future.
