Ubisoft has announced that Hyper Scape will shut down its servers at the end of April. The free-to-play battle royale shooter meant to compete with the likes of Apex Legends and Fortnite never quite found its footing and has bled players since day one. The last day to experience Hyper Scape will be April 28.

“We set out to create a vertical, close-quarters, and fast-paced shooter experience and we are extremely grateful to our community for joining us on our journey,” wrote Ubisoft in a blog update today. “We will be taking key learnings from this game into future products.

Hyper Scape first released in August 2020 to generally mixed reviews. Although Hyper Scape certainly had an interesting setting and stunning visuals that set itself apart from other battle royale games, it failed to steal players from more established franchises.

Ubisoft acknowledged that Hyper Scape was struggling soon after launch with a Season 2 refresh meant to overhaul the game's systems, rebalance its gunplay, and add new and interesting game modes. Hyper Scape continued to experiment with Season 3 in March of 2021 and received its last patch in April. By then the writing was on the wall as the developer went mostly radio silent.

That silence was broken today with the announcement that Hyper Scape will meet its end not even two years after launch.

The timing comes as Ubisoft continues to shed developers in what is being called the “great exodus.” Workplace misconduct scandals that broke in the summer of 2020 have convinced many developers to leave Ubisoft for greener pastures, leading to delayed projects and games being stuck in development hell.

This is speculation as we do not have Hyper Scape’s player numbers, but if they’re bad enough to warrant shutting down its servers, Ubisoft has likely reassigned the Hyper Scape team to plug holes left by departures in other teams.
