Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity has officially shipped over 3.5 million copies, according to the latest earnings report from Koei Tecmo. This impressive milestone translated to huge growth for the company and also propelled Age of Calamity to become the best-selling musou game of all time.
Everyone knew Age of Calamity was going to be a popular title this holiday season, but not many analysts predicted this level of success. "By the end of December, the total number of units shipped exceeded 3.5 million, the highest number for a single title in the 'Musou' series," reads a translation of the earnings report. "The total number of units shipped by the end of December exceeded 3.5 million, the highest number of units shipped by a single title in the 'Musou' series."
With the Switch's upcoming game release schedule looking a bit light, no doubt those numbers will continue to grow in the coming months.
Koei Tecmo revealed a few more numbers with its recent earnings report, including solid numbers for Nioh 2. "With repeat sales of the main game remaining strong, worldwide shipped units have now exceeded 1.4 million." It's possible some of Nioh 2's success was due to the DLC packs released in October and December, which generated a bit of hype leading into the busy holiday season. Romance of the Three Kingdoms 14, meanwhile, sold 100,000 copies in Japan and Asia.
All told, the company's net sales increased 64.7% year on year, bringing its final number to 43,949 million yen. Better yet, " Operating income for the quarter reached a record high of 10,919 million yen, and we also achieved the highest performance in all categories of net sales, operating income, ordinary income, and net income for the third quarter consolidated cumulative period."
2020 was a stellar year for the gaming industry in general, and it looks like Hyrule Warriors was no exception. The popular game takes place before the events of Breath of the Wild, giving you a look at the world of Hyrule before the Calamity. No doubt its direct relation to the popular game from 2017 helped it sell – and deserves a bit of credit for its record-breaking numbers.
