As you complete prospects in Icarus, you will have the option to unlock various building and crafting materials. Once you reach tier three of the technology tree, you will be able to make glass. This fragile material is useful in a variety of items, as well as glass construction for buildings.

In this guide, we are going to go over how to make glass, as well as several useful items that you can make with it. Tier three crafting items will unlock after you are level 20.

If you have yet to reach this level, check out our guide on how to level up. Remember, pretty much everything you do will reward experience. Over time, you will eventually become level 20.

Unlocking The Concrete Furnace

concrete furnace on the crafting technology tree

Glass is made from silica ore that has been processed at the concrete furnace. Although silica ore can be mined right at the start of the game, you will need to be level 20 to unlock the concrete furnace. Below, you can find the necessary materials needed to make the concrete furnace.

  • 12 Iron Ingot
  • 8 Rope
  • 12 Epoxy
  • 20 Concrete Mix

With these materials, you will be able to make the concrete furnace from the machining bench; this is a crafting table that will also unlock once you reach level 20. The machining bench is the first blueprint that you need to unlock prior to having any other tier three item, and can be crafted with the following materials.

  • 20 Wood
  • 12 Stone
  • 120 Iron Nails
  • 40 Iron Ingot
  • 12 Epoxy
  • 24 Rope

If you are struggling to unlock blueprints for the crafting materials, be sure to check out this interactive Icarus technology tree. Here, you can scroll through every tier, checking out all the blueprints available in the game. This is helpful if you aren't high enough level to view later tiers in the game. Additionally, an interactive map displaying cave locations is available if you need some help finding ore.

Using The Concrete Furnace

WIth your concrete furnace built and placed, all you need to do is add silica ore and coal, and then wait for the glass to be produced.

As mentioned above, silica ore is very prevalent. This ore will appear in a yellow-ish shade, standing out from nearby rocks. Silica can be found from the very first mission, making it an easy resource to acquire.

Coal can be found by mining with any quality of pickaxe, usually within caves. Fortunately, caves are quite common, and can often be found around mountains and cliff faces. When you do find a cave, be sure to look out for cave worms. These are dangerous, poison-spitting worms, that deal a lot of damage. For more information, be sure to check out our guide on how to kill a cave worm.

Additional Furnace Types

You can also use more advanced furnaces to make glass, but the concrete furnace will be available for you to craft first. Overall, just remember that any furnace unlocked after the concrete version can be used to make glass.

Blueprints That Require Glass

Glass is a material needed for several useful items. Below, you can find a list including some of the uses for glass.

  • Ceiling Lights
  • Thermos
  • Metal Oxite Dissolver
  • Dehumidifier
  • Biofuel Lamp
  • Glass Jar
  • Beer Bottle
  • Wine Bottle
  • Flashlight
  • Electric Furnace
  • Glass Building Construction Materials
    • Beam
    • Door
    • Wall
    • Angled Wall
    • Window
    • Heavy Window
    • Roof
    • Roof Corner

This is only a handful of items that require glass but as you can see, glass is an important material, especially for late-game crafted items. We recommend crafting the thermos; this is an insulated bottle that allows you to carry around water without the need for a nearby stream, river, or lake.

What Is The Glassworking Bench?

informational panel for glassworking bench

The glassworking bench is a crafting bench that allows you to craft several glass-based items, such as bottles and building construction pieces.

To build the glassworking bench, you will need the following materials.

  • 24 Iron Ingot
  • 10 Wood
  • 6 Epoxy
  • 6 Rope
  • 40 Copper Nails

This is an important bench to make if you plan on incorporating glass into your buildings, so be sure to research the glassworking bench once it becomes available.

Glass building construction materials can make you feel more at home in your base, but keep in mind that glass is a very weak material. This means that if you build in an open area, a storm may pass through and completely destroy your build. We advise using glass construction materials sparingly, so your build is not destroyed.

That's all there is to know about making glass in Icarus. Overall, remember to invest your technology points into blueprints that bring you closer to the concrete furnace and glassworking bench!
