Original SoulCalibur villain Inferno is returning to SoulCalibur VI in an explosive new official gameplay trailer reveal from Bandai Namco.

If you’ve been a fan of the SoulCalibur fighting game series, then you probably remember Inferno, the fiery antagonist that can essentially become any character in the game. This made for some difficult final battles as you never knew just who you were facing. That and Inferno always had the ability to start spinning around the screen in an attack that was basically impossible to avoid.

Well, good news! His mimicry and spin-attacky ways are back in the upcoming SoulCalibur VI, according to the latest official reveal trainer from Bandai Namco.

As a bit of a refresher for those who haven’t been up to date with SoulCalibur since the beginning, Inferno is the physical manifestation of Soul Edge, the soul-consuming legendary blade. Since Soul Edge eats souls, it can tap into the fighting style of all the past souls it has consumed and use that style against its foes.

What this effectively means is that Inferno is the mimic boss, able to impersonate any character with a few added Inferno moves on top of that. The trailer video shows Inferno only using his Siegfried/Nightmare moveset with Soul Edge in its natural form, but that doesn’t mean Inferno can’t suddenly become the twin-dagger-wielding ninja (Taki) or nunchaku-armed Elvis slash Bruce Lee (better known as Maxi).

Inferno was ostensibly destroyed by Siegfried at the end of SoulCalibur IV when the Soul Edge was shattered, but apparently, the shards of the blade were able to somehow re-assemble and thus resurrect Inferno. You just can’t keep this spinning fireball down.

We’re not quite certain if Inferno will reprise his role as the main antagonist, but according to Destructoid, he will be an unlockable character. After reaching level 20 on Soul Chronicle story mode, Inferno will be unlocked as a playable fighter.

We’re also told that Inferno retains his mimicry abilities even though the video just shows the Siegfried heavy-blade.

SoulCalibur VI will be released on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on October 19th, so mark your calendars.
