A gaming insider has claimed that Mortal Kombat 12 is likely the next title from NetherRealm Studios because Warner Bros is worried about wasting money on licenses if the studio ends up being sealed.

As spotted by Redditor Awkward96 on GamingLeaksAndRumours, gaming insider and GamesBeat reporter Jeff Grubb's latest podcast episode, Grubbsnax Selects, talks about the future of NetherRealm, as well as discussing the fate of Wild and the recently announced Quake games.

During the podcast, Grubb says, "As far as I'm aware we still haven't heard any news from NetherRealm exactly about what they're working on next and that's a big question. People think maybe it's a Marvel vs DC game, and that would be wild. It's probably not that. I think I said that it was going to be Injustice 3 or whatever - that was an educated guess.

"If you think about it a little bit further, does that make sense? Does having NetherRealm use a WB-owned property right now make sense when WB is sort of falling apart in front of our eyes. Who knows where NetherRealm is going to be next year? Does it make it easier to sell NetherRealm if it's making Mortal Kombat 12 right now? That's what I've heard is happening."

Grubb ended by saying, "I wouldn't say that this is for sure, but it lines up with the reality and it lines up with what I've heard where Mortal Kombat 12 would make the most sense because that's a game they know will make money."

Considering the state of Warner Bros, it isn't too surprising that it would try and hedge its bets by going for a safe game like Mortal Kombat 12, although it's sure to be a shame for anyone hoping for a new Injustice or the long-rumoured Marvel fighting game. On the bright side, if Warner Bros does end up selling NetherRealm then it becomes much more likely that we'll see that Marvel fighter come to fruition.
