Insomniac Games: Spider-Man Done Development, Gone Gold

The highly anticipated Spider-Man title from Insomniac Games is scheduled to release in a little over a month, on September 7th. Those worried that the PS4 exclusive could be delayed need not worry; the company confirmed today that the game has officially gone gold.

When a game has "gone gold," it simply means that the title is ready to release; development has been completed. Of course, games that are ready to release can be updated at a later time, such as patching any unexpected glitches, and adding bonus content. But, for all intents and purposes, Spider-Man is done with its core development, and you'll be able to purchase it at a retailer on September 7th.

When Spider-Man was announced two years ago at E3, fans were taken aback by how promising it looked. Spider-Man has had a rocky video game history in recent years, with his most recent console game, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, garnering a mediocre 58 on Metacritic. The upcoming PS4 title looks like it contains everything that makes a Spider-Man game great: fantastic gameplay and an engaging story. The game was seemingly supposed to release in 2017, according Ryan Penagos, the Vice President & Creative Executive of Marvel New Media. A Reddit user uploaded a clip from a livestream where Penagos stated the game would release in 2017. However, that ended up not being the case, as Sony would later confirm the title's release for September 7th, 2018.

Those who do not have a PS4 yet (or want a second, colorful console) may be interested in the Pro Bundle. The bundle contains the game, a red-colored PS4 Pro with the Spider-Man insignia, and a red-colored controller with white buttons. Although sold out on Amazon, players can still pre-order the bundle at other stores, including GameStop and Best Buy. There is also the Collector's Edition, but sadly, it appears to be sold out at the major retailers. Those who pre-order the Digital Deluxe Version will eventually gain access to "Three chapters in Marvel’s Spider-Man: The City that Never Sleeps series," among other things, according to Sony. The City that Never Sleeps is DLC that will be available to players "by March 2019," Sony states. (Insomniac confirmed in a tweet that if you buy the regular edition, you'll still be able to purchase the DLC missions separately.)

As for the game's story, the two story trailers unveiled some fascinating details. There will be a breakout at the Raft where classic Spider-Man villains will run free. The city will be in danger once more, and to make things extra interesting, Norman Osborn is running for re-election as mayor. Mary Jane and Miles Morales will factor into the story, with MJ actually being playable for the first time in a core story. There is also a secret villain, who presumably will not be revealed until players see for themselves. (Although, a voice actor for the game may have leaked who it is.)
