Twitter is a huge social media platform that's particularly important for games. Where else would we find out about Hideo Kojima's next project? Or how hard DICE is working to fix Battlefield 2042? Or whatever the hell is going on here?

So when Twitter’s CEO decides to leave, we listen to what he has to say. According to sources speaking to CNBC. Twitter boss Jack Dorsey was considering stepping away from the company. He's only 45 which would be an awfully early retirement. On the other hand, Dorsey is worth close to $12 billion according to Forbes, so he'd probably be fine if he never worked another day in his life.

The real mystery here is why Dorsey would leave at all. After founding Twitter in 2006, Dorsey previously left in 2008 before returning in 2015 following the departure of then-CEO Dick Costolo. He's since managed to build Twitter to over 200 million active users.

However, Dorsey hasn't been without criticism. Elliott Management founder Paul Singer tried to oust Dorsey as CEO last year but failed. He argued that Dorsey shouldn't be both CEO of Twitter and Square, an e-commerce platform, at the same time as it splits his attention. Instead, Dorsey should focus his attention on one company and leave the operation of the other to a successor.

The full explanation came from a tweet from Dorsey himself. "After almost 16 years of having a role at our company,” the now-former Twitter CEO wrote, “I decided it's finally time for me to leave."

Dorsey appointed Parag Agrawal as his successor, a move supported by the Twitter board, and also thanked all Twitter employees for their support during this transition. Parag assumes the role of CEO immediately.

"I want you all to know that this was my decision and I own it. It was a tough one for me, of course. I love this service and company," concluded Dorsey. "There aren't many founders that choose their company over their own ego. I know we'll prove this was the right move."
