Whether you're an intern or a CEO, there will always come a time when you'll have to do something outside your job description. I don't mean something drastic like doing your boss' laundry, but something that contributes to the company. Even Sony Interactive Entertainment boss Jim Ryan almost had to do something similar back in the day.

Ryan recently took part in a fireside chat during GamesIndustry.biz's GI Live event, where he spoke about his career path. During the discussion, he was asked about his early days with the company and what he did for PlayStation back then.

Ryan joined the company in 1994, just before the launch of the first PlayStation. Back then, he was given the task of setting up PlayStation companies in Europe. His duties included scouting Continental Europe for office spaces, hiring new recruits, setting up processes, and organising distribution, among other things. This assignment lasted a few years, and in that time, Ryan set up PlayStation's roots in Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Austria, and Scandinavia.

While this lengthy process obviously required a hands-on approach, Ryan narrated an anecdote of a time where he would have had to literally use his hands to set up an office in Frankfurt. "I took a lease on an office in Frankfurt, and we realised that there weren't any desks or chairs in there," he said. "So, there wasn't much money lying around at that time because we hadn't sold anything. So there was no cash. So we ended up going down to Ikea and buying the desks, and after that trying to work out whether we had any money left to pay someone to assemble them, or whether we'd have to do that ourselves."

While Ryan wasn't opposed to the idea of doing it himself, he did manage to eventually find the funds to have someone else set up the desks for the office. Those desks apparently served the Frankfurt office for a number of years and made a fan out of Ryan, who concluded saying, "Ikea, I'd recommend it to anybody."

Ryan also spoke about how he wished that the PlayStation 5 could reach more people worldwide. There are a few interesting stories about the early days of PlayStation and Ryan's career in the full interview.
