Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan has claimed that the PS5 will have more exclusive titles than any other console before it, including PS4.
In an interview with Nikkei, (translated by VGC) Jim Ryan explains that Sony has been investing more money into making first-party titles for the PS5. Ryan also states that the company won't rule out future studio acquisitions to bolster the PS5's first-party lineup. Two of Sony's more recent developer acquisitions include Insomniac Games in 2019 and Sucker Punch Productions back in 2011.
"We have been quietly but steadily investing in high-quality games for PlayStation, and we will make sure that the PS5 generation will have more dedicated software than ever before," explains Ryan. "We have repeatedly engaged in mergers and acquisitions, including Insomniac Games in the US. We will not rule out that option in the future."
In terms of upcoming exclusives, Sony has an impressive amount of exclusive titles hitting PS5 this year. Housemarque's Returnal is set to release at the end of this month on April 30th, Ratchet and Clank: A Rift Apart is due to release this June, Kena: Bridge of Spirits releasing in August, and blockbuster titles such as Horizon: Forbidden West and God of War: Ragnarok are also expected to come out later this year.
This isn't even counting both Demon's Souls and Mile Morales that launched with the PS5, or Deathloop and Ghostwire: Tokyo, both of which are timed exclusives. We also recently had the news that Naughty Dog is currently working on a The Last of Us Remake and that Firewalk Studios is currently developing a PlayStation exclusive, multiplayer title for the PS5 in an effort to diversify Sony's first-party offerings.
It's clear that Sony is trying to make the PS5 the console you can't ignore by releasing boatloads of must-have titles in a relatively short space of time. The quality of the exclusives is arguably the PS5's biggest draw, so it's no surprise that Sony is ramping up production of the games that made the PS4 massively popular. Hopefully, we'll learn more about future PS5 titles in the coming year.
