Chief Executive Officer of Sony Jim Ryan said that “we should expect more” studio acquisitions over the course of the next few years. This comes in the wake of news that Sony acquired the developer behind Destiny 2, Bungie, for a staggering $3.6 billion on January 31, 2022.

The news came from an interview with Ryan and Chief Executive Officer of Bungie Pete Parsons by Christopher Dring. The journalist noted that Sony has "many more moves to make" before talking about how the company plans to expand its live service games outside its "historic console heartland."

"I've been on record talking about increasing the size of the PlayStation community,” Ryan said. "We are starting to go multiplatform. You've seen that. We have an aggressive roadmap with live services and the opportunity to work with — and particularly learn from — the brilliant and talented people from Bungie.” Ryan went on to say that purchasing Bungie is going to “considerably accelerate the journey we find ourselves on." Parsons added that Bungie plans to work on “more than Destiny."

“The motivation behind Sony's acquisition of Bungie is to help boost their own abilities to make live service, multiplatform games,” Dring tweeted after the fact. “Sony unlocks the potential for Bungie to strengthen its technical capabilities and the prospect of taking its games to movies/ TV.” Sony has made moves in the film and television industry over the last couple of years with its Uncharted, Last of Us, and Ghost of Tsushima projects. The possibility of a Destiny project certainly exists.

As for the recent allegations of workplace toxicity at Bungie, Ryan wasn’t even willing to mince words. "We hold ourselves to extremely high standards throughout the organization and with the businesses that we partner. This is something that I have been incredibly sensitive to right from the start of the conversation," Ryan said. “I have been nothing but impressed and I have nothing but the highest praise for the way that Bungie organizes and conducts itself. There are a number of areas that Sony can learn from Bungie. Philanthropy is a cornerstone value and I think that speaks to everything."

The acquisition of Bungie by Sony is just the latest in a long series of recent business deals. Take-Two for example purchased Zynga for $12.7 billion and Microsoft just bought Activision Blizzard for $68.7 billion. Sony took possession of several studios over the course of this past year including Housemarque, Bluepoint, Firesprite, Nixxes, and Valkyrie. When it comes to Bungie, the deal was apparently in the works for the past several months. According to Dring, the purchase was “not a reaction to the Take-Two/ Zynga or Microsoft/ Activision deals.”
