Jurassic World Evolution 2 now contains marine dinosaurs, a new type of dinosaur not previously seen. You will be able to rescue and breed various marine dinosaurs but they will need an appropriate place to live.

Marine dinosaurs live in lagoons and while the basics of these are similar to regular enclosures there are some differences. We take a look at how lagoons work and how to build them.

What Is A Lagoon?

A lagoon is an enclosure for marine dinosaurs. It works in a similar way to regular enclosures in that it requires a hatchery, feeders and viewing platforms. Each of these items is unique to the lagoon.

Lagoons will usually require research. You'll need to make sure you have the lagoon, hatchery, and viewing platform unlocked before you begin to build. Even if you are rescuing dinosaurs you'll still need a hatchery.

How Do You Build Lagoons?

Lagoons work on a very simple tiling system. Each lagoon piece is a circle and they can be joined together as shown above to create a large expanse of water for your dinosaurs to live in. As with regular dinosaurs larger marine species will require larger areas.

There's no set shape for a lagoon, just as there isn't for an exclosure, but you will need to be more aware of terrain. This is because lagoon pieces can't be built on terrain which is too uneven. If the terrain looks bumpy use the terrain tools to create a smoother base for the enclosure.

How Do You Change The Environment In A Lagoon?

Marine dinosaurs have different requirements. They do not need specific environmental features. Instead you need to focus on:

  • Population Size
  • Area
  • Food

Environmental needs will always be open space, since environmental items cannot be placed inside lagoons. The game technically allows you to place them but they won't show up and won't affect the area. Instead you need to simply make sure the lagoon is large enough, and the population size is optimal.

How Do You Add Feeders To A Lagoon?

JWE2 Lagoon feeders hatchery and viewing platform

There are two types of feeders for lagoons. The first is a marine fish feeder, and the second a shark feeder. Both of these need to be placed against the edge of the lagoon.

The comfort information for marine dinosaurs will specify which type of feeder is required as well as the number. This number is per dinosaur so bare this in mind when adding feeders.

Do I Need A Hatchery On A Lagoon?

Technically you can run a lagoon without a hatchery. Marine dinosaurs can be rescued, and they can also be airlifted from lagoon hatcheries in other areas. However, you will likely want to build one.

This is because for a lagoon the hatchery also functions as a ranger post. It will allow rangers to be assigned to it and they will keep an eye on your dinosaurs in the lagoon and refill food supplies.

Can Dinosaurs Escape From A Lagoon?

JWE2-Mosasaurus-release-2

So far in our playthrough marine dinosaurs have not escaped. However, dinosaurs who are hungry and unhappy appear to be more vulnerable to disease and can die.

Marine dinosaurs appear to be the most tolerant of bad conditions but no one wants to see a sad dinosaur so their appeal will be reduced.

Is There Anything Else I Need To Know About Lagoons?

JWE2 marine viewing area

Lagoons are in many ways simpler than enclosures. You'll need to make sure you use lagoon specific viewing platforms, but most other aspects of them function in the same way.

Marine dinosaurs can become unhappy and lagoons can be damaged, so keep an eye on them, especially during storms. Other than that, as long as rangers are assigned to them, lagoons will generally run smoothly.
